Position Summary

The High School Science Teacher is responsible for providing engaging, standards-based instruction in one or more science disciplines, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, Environmental Science, or Integrated Science. The teacher fosters scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills while preparing students for college, careers, and responsible citizenship. Instruction shall align with Michigan Academic Standards and district curriculum requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction and Curriculum

  • Plan and deliver effective science instruction aligned with Michigan Academic Standards and district curriculum.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that promote scientific inquiry, experimentation, and critical thinking.
  • Teach assigned science courses, which may include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, Environmental Science, or other science-related subjects.
  • Integrate laboratory experiences, demonstrations, technology, and hands-on learning opportunities into instruction.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with disabilities, English learners, and advanced students.
  • Utilize instructional technology and digital resources to enhance student engagement and learning.

Laboratory and Safety Management

  • Maintain a safe and organized science classroom and laboratory environment.
  • Follow all district, state, and federal safety regulations regarding laboratory procedures and chemical handling.
  • Instruct students on proper laboratory safety practices and ensure compliance during all experiments and activities.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, supplies, and inventory records.

Student Assessment

  • Develop and administer assessments to measure student learning and mastery of science concepts.
  • Analyze student performance data to inform instruction and improve student achievement.
  • Maintain accurate records of grades, attendance, and student progress.

  • Stay current on developments in science education, curriculum, and instructional technology.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Science Education or a related scientific field.
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with appropriate secondary science endorsement(s).
