Summary: The certified pharmacy technician specialist demonstrates a high level of expertise and skill specific to medication access, transitions of care, medication reconciliation, and process improvement. This pharmacy technician specialist has a high level of autonomy working directly with patients, clinical pharmacists, prescribers, payers, and other members of the healthcare team. This position will be a hybrid position with in-person work location in Morrisville or Raleigh.
This position qualifies for our Pharmacy Technician Incentive Program, which includes $1500 in commitment incentives spread over a two-year period. Payment is made after six months, one year, and two years of employment.
Responsibilities:

  1. Utilize electronic health record and commercial vendor software efficiently to facilitate medication access.
  2. Facilitate prior authorizations and medication access for clinic patients,
  3. Document and communicate findings to the patient, provider, and pharmacies in a timely and professional manner.
  4. Troubleshoot insurance coverage issues across commercial, Medicare/Medicaid, and Tricare plans, including formulary restrictions, step therapy, and tiered coverage.
  5. Manage and resolve pharmacy-related challenges such as copay card usage, early fill overrides, and insurance updates
  6. Educate providers and patients on insurance coverage, medication assistance programs, and pharmacy benefits through various communication channels (phone, email, MyChart, clinic visits).
  7. Collaborate with pharmacy manufacturer representatives to stay updated on medication access and authorization procedures.
  8. Track and manage renewal dates for manufacturer assistance program enrollments.
  9. Provide excellent customer service with strong attention to detail and communication skills.
  10. Assist in training new employees and pharmacy learners.

Education Requirements:
โ€ข None required as long as other position qualifications are met. Current enrollment in PharmD program if working as a registered pharmacy intern with NC Board of Pharmacy.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
โ€ข Registration as a technician with the NC Board of Pharmacy unless enrolled in a PharmD program. If currently enrolled, an NCBOP Pharmacy Intern registration may be accepted.
โ€ข CPhT from PTCB or ExCPT from NHA unless enrolled in a PharmD program; if enrolled, this can be waived for the duration of the PharmD program.
Professional Experience Requirements:
โ€ข One year of pharmacy technician experience required.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
  • Strong understanding of pharmacy benefits, formulary restrictions, step therapy, and tiered insurance coverage (commercial, Medicare/Medicaid, Tricare).
  • Experience troubleshooting insurance issues and completing prior authorizations.
  • Proficient in CoverMyMeds and EPIC (including Documentation, In-Basket, MyChart, and EPIC Chat messaging).
  • Skilled in telecommunication tools such as virtual voicemail, MyChart, and email.
  • Basic knowledge of cardiovascular and heart failure medications preferred.
  • Prior retail pharmacy experience is a plus.
  • Prior medical clinic or hospital experience is a plus
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple requests and prioritize urgent issues.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills to interact effectively with patients and healthcare providers.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Ability to work independently in a work from home environment.
