Azure Virtual Desktop focuses on deploying and managing virtual desktops in the cloud, primarily for remote work. Cloud Systems Engineers design and maintain broader cloud infrastructure solutions. While both roles involve cloud technology, Azure Virtual Desktop specialists concentrate on virtual desktop environments, whereas Cloud Systems Engineers handle overall cloud architecture and systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Azure Virtual Desktop Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Azure Virtual Desktop Specialist, you need a solid understanding of virtualization, cloud computing, networking, and Microsoft Azure services, often supported by relevant certifications like Microsoft Certified: Azure Virtual Desktop Specialty. Familiarity with Azure Portal, PowerShell scripting, Active Directory, and management tools such as Azure Monitor is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and a proactive approach to troubleshooting set top performers apart. These skills ensure secure, efficient, and user-friendly virtual desktop solutions that meet organizational needs.

What are some common challenges faced by Azure Virtual Desktop administrators, and how can they be addressed?

Azure Virtual Desktop administrators often encounter challenges such as optimizing user experience, managing resource scaling, and ensuring secure access. Balancing performance and cost requires careful monitoring and proactive scaling to accommodate fluctuating user demand. Security is another priority, with administrators needing to configure multi-factor authentication and role-based access controls. Regularly reviewing Microsoft updates and best practices can help address these challenges and ensure a smooth, secure virtual desktop environment.

What is an Azure Virtual Desktop?

Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) is a cloud-based service from Microsoft that allows users to virtualize Windows desktops and applications. It enables organizations to provide secure remote access to desktops and apps from anywhere, using any device. AVD is scalable, supports multi-session Windows 10/11 experiences, and simplifies management by running everything on Microsoft Azure. It's commonly used for remote work, secure app delivery, and centralized IT management.

Introduction:

The Modern Workplace Endpoint Technical Lead is a senior technical role responsible for leading presales engagements, shaping endpoint solution designs, and driving delivery excellence across enterprise environments using Microsoft Intune, Windows Autopilot, and Cloud Endpoints (Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop). This role bridges technical depth with go-to-market ownership to help clients modernize their endpoint estate at scale.

Come Join Us:

This is your opportunity to combine deep endpoint expertise with real go-to-market influence - owning the strategy, solution approach, and delivery quality for Modern Devices across some of the world's most complex enterprise environments. You'll bring together technical leadership, Microsoft platform mastery, and the ability to shape how organizations manage, secure, and transform their endpoint landscape.

What you'll do:

Endpoint Architecture & Solution Leadership

  • Lead the design and architecture of enterprise endpoint solutions across Microsoft Intune, Windows Autopilot, Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and mobile device management platforms.

  • Define technical approach and solution blueprints for complex endpoint transformation engagements.

  • Provide technical oversight and escalation management throughout the delivery lifecycle, ensuring quality and stability of endpoint solutions.

  • Guide post-implementation stabilization and continuous improvement across the endpoint estate.

Modern Devices Go-to-Market Ownership

  • Own the Modern Devices go-to-market motion by defining offering content, refining solution approach, and guiding pursuit strategy across Windows, Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, and MDM platforms.

  • Lead presales activities including solution shaping, client discovery workshops, and estimate development for modern endpoint transformations.

  • Develop and maintain compelling collateral, proposals, and demonstrations that articulate the value of Avanade's endpoint capabilities to client stakeholders.

Endpoint Automation & Integration

  • Integrate endpoint solutions with Power Platform and automation tools to streamline and optimize device lifecycle processes.

  • Design automation frameworks for device provisioning, compliance enforcement, and operational monitoring.

  • Leverage Microsoft 365 admin tooling and Endpoint Analytics to deliver data-driven insights and continuous improvement recommendations.

Quality & Delivery Leadership

  • Provide technical leadership across delivery engagements, ensuring adherence to architecture standards, deployment quality, and client outcomes.

  • Contribute reusable assets, delivery standards, and accelerators that improve quality, consistency, and velocity across endpoint engagements.

  • Conduct technical reviews, code/configuration audits, and risk assessments to uphold delivery excellence.

Stakeholder & Client Engagement

  • Act as a trusted technical advisor for client stakeholders, translating complex endpoint requirements into clear, actionable solution strategies.

  • Lead client-facing workshops, architecture reviews, and executive briefings to communicate endpoint roadmap and transformation value.

  • Build strong relationships with Microsoft account teams to align endpoint-related opportunities and joint go-to-market activities.

Team Leadership & Capability Building

  • Mentor and coach team members in endpoint technologies, delivery practices, and client engagement skills.

  • Shape the evolution of Modern Devices capabilities by contributing to community of practice initiatives, knowledge sharing, and internal enablement programs.

  • Support recruitment and talent development to grow Avanade's endpoint practice depth and breadth.

.

Skills & Experiences:

Core Technical Skills

  • Deep expertise in deploying and managing enterprise endpoint solutions with Microsoft Intune, Windows Autopilot, and Windows 365 and AVD.

  • Strong knowledge of Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), and hybrid endpoint management architectures.

  • Proficiency in Entra ID, RBAC configuration, Conditional Access policies, and Microsoft Purview compliance frameworks.

  • Experience with Security and Compliance configuration across enterprise endpoint environments.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365 admin tools and Endpoint Analytics for monitoring, reporting, and optimization.

  • Microsoft certifications: MD-102 (Endpoint Administrator) and AZ-140 (AVD Specialty) and related/adjacent certifications are highly desirable.

Delivery & Architecture

  • Proven experience leading end-to-end device lifecycle management, including provisioning, configuration, patching, and retirement processes.

  • Expertise in designing and implementing Autopilot provisioning workflows and zero-touch deployment models.

  • Experience integrating endpoint solutions with Power Platform and automation tooling to drive process efficiency.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead pre-sales engagements, develop solution estimates, and shape go-to-market strategies for endpoint offerings.

  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently at executive and technical levels.

  • Experience facilitating workshops, architecture reviews, and change management programs to drive technology adoption.

  • Commercial awareness and the ability to align endpoint solutions with client business outcomes and investment priorities.

  • Collaborative mindset with experience working in matrixed consulting environments alongside Microsoft partner teams.

Key Success Metrics

  • Successful delivery of enterprise endpoint transformation programs on time, within scope, and to a high-quality standard.
