Overview

This Engineering Manager (Player/Coach) role is responsible for leading a team of software engineers while also contributing hands-on to the technical design and development of Reporting & Analytics product area. In this hybrid leadership role, you will be accountable for engineering delivery, team development, architectural direction, and maintaining high standards of software quality-while still actively participating in coding, reviewing, troubleshooting, and helping solve complex engineering challenges.

You will work across the full development lifecycle, partnering closely with product, engineering, and business stakeholders to deliver high-impact features. As a player/coach, you will shape engineering culture, cultivate strong technical talent, and ensure that the team is aligned with HungerRush's goals as we transition into an era where AI-enabled development becomes a core part of how we operate. Our focus is on embedding AI into our internal processes to streamline development, improve decision-making, and accelerate the delivery of business value. We are looking for a leader who is excited to innovate, adapt quickly, and help build a high-performing engineering organization.

Your team will own the end-to-end reporting pipeline-from ingestion to modeling to delivery-using technologies such as Azure Data Explorer (ADX), SQL Server / T-SQL, C#, and VueJS, supported by strong Azure infrastructure. Deep experience with analytics best-practices (grains, dimensions, aggregates, semantic modeling) is essential.

This role is critical in evolving the HungerRush data platform into a scalable, high-performance source of truth for customers and internal teams.

This is a remote role.

What You'll Do

Leadership & People Management

Lead, mentor, and grow a team of reporting and analytics engineers in a hands-on player/coach capacity.

  • Drive engineering excellence, technical strategy, and architectural decisions for the reporting platform.
  • Reinforce a culture of ownership, transparency, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee hiring, performance management, and career development for the team.

Technical Execution

  • Architect and deliver scalable reporting and analytics solutions using:
    • Azure Data Explorer (ADX) and KQL
      • SQL Server / T-SQL
      • Azure infrastructure (Azure Container Apps, Storage, etc.)
      • C# for backend services and integration components
      • VueJS for reporting and analytics UI experiences
    • Build and maintain high-performance data ingestion, transformation, and query pipelines for real-time and near-real-time reporting.
    • Build and operate deployment pipelines using GitHub Actions.
    • Develop meaningful and intuitive reporting features that leverage strong data modeling fundamentals-including proper grains, dimensions, aggregates, and semantic layers.
    • Ensure our data and reporting platforms meet high standards for reliability, performance, and scalability.
    • Participate hands-on in coding, code reviews, debugging, and complex problem resolution.
    • Partner closely with Product, Data Engineering, and Platform Engineering to define the roadmap and deliver high-impact features.

    Cross-Functional Collaboration

    • Translate business reporting needs into technical architecture and execution plans.
    • Work with product managers to shape the analytics roadmap and define success metrics.
    • Collaborate with Customer Success and Support teams to address customer data requirements, performance issues, and enhancements.
    • Promote analytics best-practices across the organization.
    • Position the system for A.I. driven analytics.

    Required Qualifications

    • 7+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, software engineering, or reporting platform development.
    • 2+ years in a technical leadership or engineering management role (player/coach or team lead strongly preferred).
    • Hands-on expertise with:
    • Azure Data Explorer (ADX) and Kusto Query Language (KQL)
    • SQL Server (T-SQL) for modeling, performance tuning, and complex queries
    • Azure infrastructure services (Event Hub, Data Factory, Functions, Storage, Monitoring, etc.)
    • C#/.NET for backend development
    • VueJS or similar modern JavaScript frameworks for UI/reporting experiences
    • Strong background in data analytics best practices, including:
    • Defining grains and dimensional models
    • Designing aggregated datasets
    • Semantic modeling for reporting
    • Building maintainable and scalable metrics layers
    • Experience building or maintaining customer-facing or embedded reporting solutions.
    • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience in SaaS, restaurant technology, or other high-volume transactional environments.
    • Familiarity with distributed systems, streaming architectures, and big data ecosystems.
    • Experience with real-time telemetry, operational dashboards, and BI tools (Power BI, Looker, Tableau, etc.).
    • Datadog (or equivalent) instrumentation and app analytics
    • Understanding of data governance, observability, testing strategies, and scalable design patterns.
    • Ability to balance hands-on technical work with strategic leadership.

    Why Join HungerRush?

    • Lead a team building mission-critical data and reporting capabilities used by thousands of restaurants.
    • Work with modern data and cloud technologies, driving meaningful architectural impact.
    • Collaborative environment that values innovation, ownership, and engineering excellence.
    • Opportunities for growth as we scale our platform, datasets, and customer-facing analytics experiences.
