Will AI replace Azure DevOps?

Azure DevOps professionals focus on managing software development processes, automation, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD). While AI tools can enhance productivity and automate certain tasks, they are unlikely to fully replace the need for skilled DevOps practitioners who oversee complex workflows, troubleshoot issues, and implement strategic solutions. AI serves as a complement rather than a substitute for human expertise in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Azure DevOps Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Azure DevOps Engineer, you need a strong background in software development, cloud computing (especially Microsoft Azure), and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) practices, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Azure DevOps Services, PowerShell, Git, Docker, Kubernetes, and certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure DevOps Engineer Expert are highly valuable. Outstanding problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset help you navigate cross-functional teams and adapt to evolving project needs. These skills enable the efficient delivery, automation, and management of applications and infrastructure within dynamic enterprise environments.

Is Azure DevOps in demand?

Azure DevOps professionals are in high demand as organizations adopt cloud-based development and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) practices. Skills in Azure DevOps tools, automation, and cloud environments are valuable for roles involving software development, deployment, and infrastructure management.

Is DevOps still in demand in 2026?

DevOps roles, including Azure DevOps specialists, are expected to remain in high demand through 2026 due to ongoing digital transformation and the need for continuous integration and deployment skills. Professionals with expertise in automation, cloud platforms, and CI/CD tools are particularly sought after in various industries.

What is the difference between Azure Devops vs DevOps Engineer?

Azure Devops is a platform for managing software development lifecycle within Microsoft Azure, while a DevOps Engineer is a role that encompasses implementing and managing CI/CD pipelines across various platforms, including Azure, AWS, or GCP. The role of a DevOps Engineer is broader, involving automation, infrastructure as code, and cross-platform integrations, whereas Azure Devops is a specific toolset used by Azure-focused teams.

What is an Azure DevOps engineer?

An Azure DevOps engineer is a professional who specializes in implementing and managing DevOps practices using Microsoft's Azure platform. They are responsible for automating processes, setting up continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, managing infrastructure as code, monitoring applications, and ensuring collaboration between development and operations teams. Their goal is to streamline software development and deployment while maintaining security and reliability in cloud environments.

What are the most common challenges faced by Azure DevOps professionals in managing CI/CD pipelines?

Azure DevOps professionals often face challenges such as integrating diverse tools into the CI/CD pipeline, maintaining security throughout the deployment process, and ensuring consistency across multiple environments. Balancing speed of deployment with quality assurance is also a frequent concern, especially when collaborating with multiple development teams. Regular communication with stakeholders and ongoing monitoring of pipeline health are crucial to proactively address these issues.

Is DevOps dead due to AI?

Azure DevOps professionals continue to be in demand as AI tools enhance automation and efficiency in software development and deployment. While AI impacts certain tasks, DevOps roles now often require integrating AI and machine learning skills, making the role evolving rather than obsolete.

Diversity - Innovation - Caring - Global Collaboration - Winning Spirit - High Performance

At Boston Scientific, we'll give you the opportunity to harness all that's within you by working in teams of diverse and high-performing employees, tackling some of the most important health industry challenges. With access to the latest tools, information and training, we'll help you in advancing your skills and career. Here, you'll be supported in progressing - whatever your ambitions.

About the role:

Boston Scientific was recognized by Forbes as one of the Best Workplaces for Engineers in 2026, reflecting a culture where engineers do meaningful work.

The Azure Principal DevOps Engineer is a senior, hands-on technical leader who owns CI/CD standards, promotion workflows and release automation governance for an Azure-based platform in a regulated medical device environment. This role designs, builds and evolves reusable delivery capabilities that make secure, reliable and governed software delivery the default.

You will shape how infrastructure, application and platform changes move from source control through build, test, release and production operations, enabling fast delivery without compromising safety, compliance or operational stability. This role operates at the intersection of platform engineering, site reliability engineering (SRE), security and application teams, transforming delivery into a product rather than a collection of one-off pipelines and manual processes.

At Boston Scientific, we value collaboration and synergy. This role follows a hybrid work model requiring employees to be in our local office at least three days per week. Boston Scientific will not offer sponsorship or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this position at this time. Relocation assistance is not available for this position at this time.

This is a defined-term role with an expected duration of 24 months from the employee's start date. There is no guarantee of full-time employment beyond the listed duration.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Design and implement reusable Azure DevOps patterns across source control, build automation, release orchestration, environment promotion and deployment validation for application and platform workloads.
  • Build and maintain infrastructure-as-code modules, pipeline templates and Terraform-based compositions supporting landing zones, platform services, application environments and sandbox lifecycle controls.
  • Translate security and governance requirements into automated delivery controls, including policy-as-code, approval gates, security scanning, secrets management, artifact provenance, least-privilege access and release governance.
  • Standardize build, test and release evidence capture to ensure traceable quality gates, signed artifacts and auditable approvals for all promotion decisions.
  • Enable safe and resilient delivery through blue-green, canary, rolling and feature flag deployment strategies, including rollback design, smoke validation and change evidence capture.
  • Partner with architecture, security, SRE, platform engineering and product teams to improve release readiness, reduce lead time and remove friction from compliant delivery.
  • Embed observability, alerting, incident response and recovery workflows into release pipelines through deployment telemetry, runbook integration and rollback readiness.
  • Design delivery capabilities that incorporate cost control, environment parity and operational resilience, including tagging standards, capacity-aware deployments, backup and disaster recovery validation.
  • Evaluate and implement delivery technologies, document standards and architectural decisions and coach engineers to elevate DevOps maturity across the organization.

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, engineering or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 13 years' experience in infrastructure, DevOps, platform engineering or cloud operations, including minimum of 6 years' experience designing and delivering cloud-native platforms on Azure or comparable environments.
  • Minimum of 4 years' experience designing and implementing reusable delivery platforms, including infrastructure-as-code modules, CI/CD pipeline templates and governed release workflows.
  • Minimum of 4 years' experience building and operating automated build, test, deployment and rollback processes in production environments, preferably supporting regulated or sensitive workloads.
  • Minimum of 4 years' experience implementing security and governance controls within delivery pipelines, including policy enforcement, approvals, secrets management, artifact validation, access control and security scanning.
  • Demonstrated experience with Azure platform services across compute, networking, storage, identity, governance and operations, including Azure DevOps, GitHub, Azure Resource Manager, Azure Kubernetes Service and Microsoft Entra ID.
  • Strong experience with release engineering practices, including environment promotion, deployment gating, versioning, traceability, artifact signing and software provenance.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation using Python and Bash, with working knowledge of Terraform for infrastructure provisioning and platform management.
  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes-based platforms and containerized workload orchestration.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree in computer science, engineering, information systems or a related field.
  • Experience leading platform modernization or DevOps transformation initiatives with measurable improvements in deployment frequency, stability and recovery time.
  • Experience with GitOps tools such as Flux or Argo CD and progressive delivery or configuration management practices.
  • Experience with cloud-native observability, distributed tracing, service-level objectives (SLOs) and incident response practices.
  • Experience with policy-as-code, software supply chain security and provenance controls.
  • Familiarity with regulated environments such as medical device or clinical industries requiring strict change control, validation and auditability.
  • Experience supporting integrated delivery pipelines across applications, infrastructure and data platforms in Azure environments.
  • Experience with container registries, image scanning, dependency management and secure software delivery practices.
