What is an Azure developer?

An Azure Developer is a software professional who designs, builds, tests, and maintains cloud applications and services using Microsoft Azure. They leverage Azure's tools, platforms, and services to create scalable, secure, and reliable solutions. Azure Developers often work with programming languages such as C#, JavaScript, and Python, and integrate Azure services like Azure Functions, App Services, and Azure Storage into their applications.

What are the job duties for an Azure developer?

The job duties of an Azure developer are to consult with clients to determine their goals and needs related to cloud computing, virtual servers, and web hosting using Microsoft Azure applications, and then to design software applications or databases to reach those goals. As a developer, you work as part of a large team of technical experts, including programmers, QA testers, and project managers to design new products, or scale existing solutions and deploy them.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Azure developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Azure Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as C# or Python), cloud architecture knowledge, and experience with Microsoft Azure services, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Azure DevOps, ARM templates, and relevant certifications like Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate are typically required. Problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These skills and qualifications enable efficient cloud solution development, integration, and collaboration in dynamic technical environments.

How does an Azure developer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during cloud solution projects?

As an Azure Developer, you will frequently work alongside solution architects, DevOps engineers, security specialists, and business analysts to design, implement, and optimize cloud-based solutions. Collaboration often involves participating in sprint planning, code reviews, and daily stand-ups to ensure alignment on project goals and technical requirements. Effective communication and a willingness to share cloud expertise are key, as you may be called upon to explain Azure best practices and troubleshooting strategies to team members with varying levels of cloud experience.

  • Support and troubleshoot a custom Azure-native messaging solution through log/telemetry analysis, root-cause analysis, configuration review, deployment troubleshooting, and reliability improvements.
  • Troubleshoot Azure Service Bus, API Management, Azure Functions or similar compute services, Cosmos DB or Azure SQL, Key Vault, Managed Identity/RBAC, and Azure networking for PaaS services.
  • Use PowerShell, Python, Terraform/Terragrunt, Git/GitHub, C#, Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Application Insights, KQL, and approved AI-assisted engineering tools for automation, infrastructure-as-code, validation, observability, troubleshooting, refactoring, and documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in systems administration, infrastructure engineering, or enterprise IT operations with demonstrated senior-level technical ownership and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong hands-on Windows Server administration experience in an enterprise environment, including performance, security, patching, troubleshooting, and core infrastructure services.
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Entra ID, Active Directory, hybrid identity, Exchange Hybrid, Microsoft Teams/eDiscovery, DNS, certificate management, access controls, and file permissions.
  • Strong PowerShell scripting and operational automation experience; experience using Python for administration, API checks, validation, reporting, log analysis, or repeatable troubleshooting workflows.
  • Experience supporting Microsoft Azure environments and troubleshooting Azure-hosted applications/services, including platform configuration, deployments, messaging, identity, and monitoring.
  • Working experience with Terraform or Terragrunt and Git/GitHub; strong customer-facing support and cross-team collaboration skills; must be available on-site during emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Azure Government (AzureUSGovernment), Azure PaaS networking, Azure observability, and integration/message-flow troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read, troubleshoot, and make targeted corrections to C#/.NET and Python code; experience with Kubernetes or containerized workloads is beneficial but not required.
  • Experience leveraging approved generative AI or AI-assisted development tools for DevOps scripting, Terraform/IaC, debugging, root-cause and log/KQL analysis, refactoring, deployment validation, and runbook creation; ability to validate AI-generated output and safeguard credentials and sensitive information.
  • Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Windows Server Hybrid Administrator, Azure Administrator, Azure Solutions Architect, Azure DevOps Engineer, or HashiCorp Terraform Associate.
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience accepted. Operational documentation and runbook experience is also preferred.

  • Serve in a high-impact senior technical role supporting mission-critical public services across traditional Microsoft enterprise technologies and modern Azure-native services.
