What is an Azure Developer Operations Engineer?

Azure Developer Operations Engineers, often referred to as Azure DevOps Engineers, are IT professionals who specialize in automating, deploying, and managing applications and infrastructure on Microsoft Azure cloud services. They work at the intersection of development and operations, implementing continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, monitoring systems, managing cloud resources, and ensuring application reliability and scalability. Their role often involves collaborating with developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to streamline software delivery and improve operational efficiency using Azure tools and services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Azure Developer Operations Engineer?

To thrive as an Azure Developer Operations Engineer, you need expertise in cloud computing, infrastructure as code, automation, and strong knowledge of Microsoft Azure services, often supported by a relevant degree and Azure certifications such as AZ-400. Familiarity with DevOps tools like Azure DevOps, PowerShell, ARM templates, and CI/CD pipelines is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring reliable, scalable deployments and seamless collaboration between development and operations teams in cloud environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Azure Developer Operations Engineers when implementing CI/CD pipelines?

Azure Developer Operations Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating diverse tools and technologies, managing permissions and security across multiple environments, and ensuring smooth automation of deployments. Troubleshooting pipeline failures and optimizing build and release times are also frequent tasks, requiring strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Collaboration with development, QA, and IT teams is crucial to address environment inconsistencies and to align deployment processes with business needs.

You will work hands‑on with our Infrastructure as Code (Bicep), CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps), and a diverse set of Azure services including App Services, Azure Functions, SQL Database, Service Bus, Key Vault, API Management, Front Door, and Redis Cache. This role is critical to maintaining platform reliability and enabling the engineering team to ship features efficiently.

  • 2+ years managing CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps (YAML pipelines, templates, artifact management)
  • Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code using Bicep or ARM templates
  • Working knowledge of Azure SQL Database administration (DTU/vCore sizing, backup, monitoring, performance tuning)
  • Experience with Azure Functions (consumption and app service plans, triggers: Service Bus, Timer, HTTP, Durable Functions)
  • Familiarity with .NET 6 application deployment and hosting on Azure App Services
  • Experience with Azure Service Bus or similar messaging systems
  • Understanding of multi‑tenant SaaS architecture and environment isolation
Responsibilities

  • Own and improve modular Bicep templates for infrastructure provisioning, including provider templates and business logic modules
  • Manage and optimize Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines for .NET 6 backends, Angular frontends, Node.js report service, and SSDT database projects
  • Administer and monitor multiple Azure Function Apps spanning email processing, e‑signatures, search sync, event publishing, data warehouse ETL, and report generation
  • Manage Azure SQL Database operations including performance tuning, backup/recovery, automated maintenance (index defragmentation, CHECKDB), and DACPAC deployments
  • Configure and maintain Azure Service Bus messaging infrastructure (topics, queues, dead‑letter handling, session‑enabled processing)
  • Manage Azure Key Vault for secrets, connection strings, API keys, and certificate lifecycle across all environments
  • Operate Azure Front Door for global load balancing, CDN, SSL termination, and DDoS protection
  • Configure and maintain Azure API Management gateway with environment‑specific endpoints, rate limiting, and JWT validation
  • Implement and maintain automated maintenance schedules via Azure Automation (daily identity sync, weekly data cleanup, monthly integrity checks)
  • Monitor platform health using Application Insights, Log Analytics, and Azure Monitor; configure alerting and incident response
  • Enforce zero‑trust security architecture with managed identities, least‑privilege access, and environment‑specific Azure AD group policies
  • Support database deployment workflows using SSDT, DACPAC, and publish profiles across environments
  • Optimize build pipelines for parallel execution, artifact consistency, and build‑once/deploy‑many strategy
  • Manage environment‑specific resource scaling (Basic B3 for dev/test to Premium V3 P2v3 for staging/production)
Required Skills
