What is an Azure Data Factory?

An Azure Data Factory job refers to a data processing task executed within Azure Data Factory (ADF), a cloud-based data integration service. ADF enables the creation, scheduling, and orchestration of ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) and ELT (Extract, Load, Transform) workflows. These jobs help in moving and transforming data between various data stores, such as Azure Blob Storage, SQL databases, and on-premises systems. By using pipelines, activities, and triggers, ADF automates data workflows efficiently.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working with Azure Data Factory, and how can they be addressed?

One of the main challenges in an Azure Data Factory role is managing complex data pipelines that span multiple data sources and destinations, which requires careful orchestration and monitoring. Troubleshooting data integration issues and ensuring data accuracy can also be demanding, especially when dealing with large volumes of data or evolving business requirements. Successful professionals often address these challenges by staying updated with Azure’s latest features, implementing robust error-handling, and collaborating closely with data architects and business analysts. Joining a supportive team environment and accessing ongoing training can further assist in overcoming common hurdles and advancing in your career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Azure Data Factory position, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Azure Data Factory role, you need expertise in data integration, ETL processes, and cloud data solutions, typically supported by a background in computer science or information technology. Familiarity with Microsoft Azure Data Factory, Azure SQL Database, and certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate are highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving skills help professionals excel in cross-functional teams. These skills are essential for designing, deploying, and maintaining efficient data workflows that support business analytics and decision-making.

Is Azure Data Factory being phased out?

Azure Data Factory remains a core cloud data integration service within Microsoft Azure and is actively supported and developed. There are no indications that it will be phased out in the near future, and it continues to be widely used by data engineers and analysts for building data pipelines and workflows. Staying updated with Azure's product roadmap and certifications can help ensure skills remain relevant.

Is Azure Data Factory in demand?

Azure Data Factory is a widely used cloud-based data integration service, and professionals skilled in it are in high demand due to the increasing adoption of cloud data solutions. Knowledge of data pipelines, ETL processes, and related tools like Azure Synapse Analytics can enhance job prospects in data engineering and analytics roles.

What can you do with Azure Data Factory?

Azure Data Factory is a cloud-based data integration service that allows data engineers and analysts to create, schedule, and manage data pipelines for moving and transforming data across various sources and destinations. It supports data ingestion, data transformation using mapping and data flow activities, and orchestration of complex workflows, often integrating with other Azure services. Proficiency in data pipeline design, ETL processes, and familiarity with Azure environments are essential for roles involving Azure Data Factory.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT data pipelines that move data from source systems into the governed data platform.

  • Develop and maintain data models and schemas to establish a single source of truth and eliminate redundant business logic.

  • Partner with stakeholders to translate business and reporting requirements into technical pipeline and data structure designs.

Job description

As a Data Engineer at Crescent Electric Supply, you will be responsible for the architecture, development, and management of Crescent's data pipelines, enabling reliable analytics and downstream business processes across all entities (Crescent, STWY, WMCK, LOWE). You will build and maintain the platform's Bronze/Silver/Gold data layers, ensures a single source of truth for critical data, and provides indirect leadership and mentorship to the SQL Developers on the data platform team. You will partner closely with the BI & Analytics Developer(s) and business stakeholders to ensure the underlying data is accurate, well-governed, and structured to support self-service reporting and advanced analytics.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Pipeline Architecture & Development: Design, build, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT data pipelines that move data from source systems (Eclipse/Epicor, Salesforce, Workday, and others) into the governed data platform.

  • Data Modeling: Develop and maintain data models and schemas (Bronze/Silver/Gold medallion architecture) that eliminate redundant business logic and establish a single source of truth.

  • Platform Modernization: Lead the technical build-out of the data platform in support of the Google Cloud migration, retiring shadow data paths and truncate-and-reload patterns in favor of governed, auditable processes.

  • AI-Enabled Engineering: Learn and leverage AI coding tools (such as Claude Code) to optimize pipeline code, accelerate development, and streamline data delivery processes; evaluate and champion effective AI-assisted engineering practices across the data platform team.

  • Data Quality & Governance: Engineer governance, validation, and error-handling directly into pipeline design rather than relying on downstream policy; monitor pipeline health and proactively resolve data integrity issues.

  • Technical Mentorship & Leadership: Provide indirect leadership, coaching, and code-review guidance to the SQL Developers on the data platform team; set standards and best practices for SQL development and pipeline design.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with the DBA, BI Developer(s), and business stakeholders to translate business and reporting requirements into technical pipeline and data structure designs.

  • Documentation: Maintain clear technical documentation of data flows, transformations, and architecture to support team continuity and knowledge transfer.

  • Security & Compliance: Ensure data pipelines adhere to data handling, access control, and security standards across all four ERP instances.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 5-7+ years of experience in data engineering, ETL development, or database development.

  • Experience supporting multi-entity or multi-ERP environments a plus.

  • Strong hands-on expertise in SQL and relational database systems; working knowledge of NoSQL a plus.

  • Experience building and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines using tools such as SSIS, Azure Data Factory, or equivalent.

  • Experience with cloud data platforms (Google Cloud, Azure, or AWS); Google Cloud experience strongly preferred.

  • Solid understanding of data modeling concepts, including medallion (Bronze/Silver/Gold) or similar layered architectures.

  • Scripting/programming experience (Python or similar) for automation and data transformation a plus.

  • Experience with ERP systems (Eclipse/Epicor) a plus.

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and guide less-experienced developers.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve data integrity issues in complex, multi-system environments.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Hands-on AI experience a plus.

  • Willingness to learn and apply AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code) to optimize development work and streamline pipeline delivery.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Frequent sitting, standing, and occasional walking.

  • Occasional reaching, twisting, bending.

  • Extensive use of technology, such as phone, computer, and keyboard.

  • Close vision with clear vision at 20 inches or less.

  • Color vision with the ability to identify and distinguish colors.

  • May be required to work more than 40 hours per week.
