What are some common challenges faced in an Azure Compliance role when working with cross-functional teams?

Professionals in Azure Compliance often need to bridge the gap between technical teams, legal departments, and business stakeholders. One key challenge is translating complex regulatory requirements into actionable technical controls that engineers and developers can implement within Azure environments. Additionally, ensuring consistent compliance across multiple projects or business units can be demanding, as different teams may have varying levels of cloud security maturity. Strong communication and collaboration skills are essential to align everyone on compliance goals and to address gaps proactively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Azure Compliance professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Azure Compliance professional, you need a solid understanding of cloud computing, regulatory frameworks (such as GDPR, HIPAA, or ISO 27001), and risk management, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications like Microsoft Certified: Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals. Familiarity with Azure Security Center, Microsoft Purview, compliance management tools, and audit systems is typically required. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help ensure that compliance standards are interpreted and implemented accurately across teams. These competencies are critical for maintaining regulatory compliance, protecting organizational data, and managing risk in cloud environments.

What is the difference between Azure Compliance vs Azure Security Engineer?

Both roles require knowledge of Azure, but their core responsibilities differ, with compliance emphasizing standards and audits, and security emphasizing threat prevention and response.

What is Azure Compliance?

Azure Compliance refers to Microsoft's set of tools, certifications, and processes that help organizations meet regulatory, legal, and industry-specific requirements when using Microsoft Azure cloud services. It ensures that data stored and processed in Azure adheres to standards such as GDPR, HIPAA, ISO, and more. Azure provides compliance offerings, audit readiness resources, and built-in controls to help businesses achieve and maintain compliance in the cloud environment.

Job description

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced Azure Cloud Architect who is comfortable wearing many hats. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys designing systems end-to-end, getting hands-on with implementation, and balancing architecture decisions with security, cost, and operational realities. You would be joining a small, start-up company where each person must wear multiple hats and be able to tackle new problems quickly and effectively.

You’ll be responsible for designing, deploying, and maintaining secure, scalable Azure environments—supporting everything from containerized applications to large ML/LLM workloads. You’ll work closely with developers and leadership to ensure our cloud platform is reliable, compliant, and cost-effective.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and evolve cloud architectures on Microsoft Azure with a focus on scalability, security, and maintainability
  • Build, operate and optimize containerized workloads using Azure Container Apps (and related services)
  • Deploy and support large ML models and LLM-based workloads with performance and cost considerations
  • Design and manage Azure networking (VNets, subnets, private endpoints, routing, DNS, firewall rules)
  • Implement and maintain cloud security controls using Azure Firewall, Azure Sentinel, and other Azure-native security tooling
  • Define and enforce security best practices to support SOC 2 compliance and audit readiness
  • Implement infrastructure as code using Terraform
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions
  • Establish monitoring, logging, and alerting using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Application Insights
  • Serve as a trusted advisor and technical leader, helping teams make sound architectural decisions

What We’re Looking For

We’re less focused on checking every box and more interested in someone who can reason through complex problems and adapt quickly.

Required / Strong Experience In:

  • Microsoft Azure architecture and core services
  • Containers and container orchestration (especially Azure Container Apps)
  • Azure networking and security fundamentals
  • Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred)
  • Monitoring, logging, and operational excellence
  • Cost management and optimization in cloud environments
  • Deploying and operating ML or LLM workloads in production

Nice to Have / Bonus Experience:

  • Azure Sentinel and SIEM/SOAR workflows
  • Supporting or passing SOC 2 audits (or similar compliance frameworks)
  • Experience in regulated or security-conscious environments
  • Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions)

What Success Looks Like

  • Cloud environments are secure, observable, and cost-efficient
  • Architecture decisions balance speed, reliability, and long-term maintainability
  • Teams are empowered with clear patterns, tooling, and automation
  • Audits and security reviews are predictable—not fire drills
