Azure Automation information

What is Azure Automation?

Azure Automation is a cloud-based service provided by Microsoft Azure that allows users to automate, configure, and manage tasks across Azure and non-Azure environments. It enables the automation of repetitive processes using runbooks (PowerShell or Python scripts), configuration management, and update management. This helps organizations reduce manual errors, save time, and improve operational efficiency. Azure Automation can be used to deploy resources, manage updates, and orchestrate complex workflows across hybrid cloud environments.

Is Azure in high demand?

Azure automation roles are in high demand due to the increasing adoption of cloud services and the need for efficient cloud management. Professionals with skills in Azure, scripting, and cloud infrastructure are sought after across various industries, often requiring certifications like Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate.

What is the difference between Azure Automation vs Azure DevOps Engineer?

Azure Automation focuses on automating cloud management tasks within Azure, while Azure DevOps Engineer specializes in building and managing development pipelines and DevOps practices. Both roles require scripting skills and Azure certifications but serve different aspects of cloud and software development management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Azure Automation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Azure Automation Engineer, you need expertise in cloud computing, scripting languages like PowerShell or Python, and a solid understanding of Azure services, typically supported by certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate. Familiarity with Azure Automation, ARM templates, CI/CD pipelines, and monitoring tools is crucial for managing and deploying cloud resources efficiently. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help engineers collaborate across teams and resolve complex automation challenges. These skills ensure the reliable, scalable, and secure automation of IT workflows, which is essential for operational efficiency in cloud environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in Azure Automation roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Azure Automation often encounter challenges such as keeping up with frequent platform updates, managing complex workflows across hybrid environments, and ensuring robust security for automated processes. Adapting to new features and changes requires continuous learning and proactive monitoring of Azure's documentation and community forums. Collaborating closely with development, operations, and security teams helps ensure that automation scripts are reliable, well-documented, and aligned with organizational standards.

Is Azure Automation a thing?

Job description

Program Description: Delivers end-to-end IT infrastructure support across all service tiers, including Tier 1 Help Desk, Tier 2 End User Support, and Tier 3 Server, Platform, and Network Engineering. The program provides comprehensive support for hardware, software, and network services; manages incidents, problems, and service requests; maintains continuous infrastructure monitoring and operations; oversees hardware and software lifecycle activities; and ensures coordinated escalation and resolution across all tiers to maintain service continuity and performance.
Position Description:
Provides technical leadership and engineering oversight for the design, implementation, and operation of the enterprise virtualized infrastructure, with a focus on VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), vSphere, NSX, and hybrid cloud integration. This role serves as the escalation point for complex issues, drives architectural decisions, and ensures the environment is optimized for performance, resiliency, and scalability.
The environment spans on-premises SDDC infrastructure (compute, storage, network), VCF-based platforms, and cloud services (e.g., Azure/AWS), requiring deep expertise in workload placement, lifecycle management, and hybrid connectivity.
Requirements
• Lead architecture, design, and evolution of VMware-based SDDC environments, including VCF domains, vSphere clusters, vSAN, and NSX networking.
• Plan and execute workload migrations across environments, including data center migrations, adoption, and workload rebalancing.
• Integrate site-to-site recovery strategy using JetStream, including supporting disaster recovery runbooks, tabletops, failover/failback processes, and recovery validation.
• Plan and coordinate VCF lifecycle management activities, including patching, upgrades, and bundle management across domains.
• Lead reoccurring performance and capacity planning across compute, storage, and network layers, ensuring efficient resource utilization and future scalability.
• Design and implement network segmentation and microsegmentation using NSX, aligned to Zero Trust and security requirements.
• Define and manage infrastructure service offerings, including customization profiles and service catalog capabilities within VCF (or equivalent SDDC abstractions).
• Lead complex troubleshooting across the full stack (compute, storage, network, and virtualization layers), including performance degradation and stability issues.
• Oversee and enhance backup and recovery solutions to ensure data protection, integrity, and availability.
• Establish and maintain automation patterns for provisioning, configuration, and lifecycle management.
• Ensure security and compliance through patching, configuration management, and integration with enterprise security controls.
• Maintain authoritative documentation for architecture, configurations, and operational procedures.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering and operations teams.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend improvements to the platform and operating model.
Required Skills:
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 10+ yrs leading virtualization administration.
• Demonstrated experience in leading the management of VMware, Hyper-V, or similar technologies.
• Must have VCF experience.
• Automating IT administration and server provisioning through tools such as Azure DevOps, Azure Automation, Azure CLI, Bicep, PowerShell, JavaScript, and/or VMWare PowerCLI.
