What are some common challenges AWS data engineers face when managing large-scale data pipelines?

AWS Data Engineers often encounter challenges related to optimizing data pipelines for scalability and cost efficiency. Managing data ingestion from diverse sources, ensuring data quality, and handling real-time data processing can be complex at scale. Additionally, they must regularly monitor and troubleshoot pipeline failures, integrate new AWS services, and collaborate closely with data scientists, analysts, and DevOps teams to ensure data accessibility and security. Proactively addressing these challenges is vital for maintaining reliable and efficient data workflows.

What is an AWS data engineer?

AWS Data Engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain data pipelines and architectures on Amazon Web Services (AWS). They work with large datasets, using AWS services such as Amazon S3, Redshift, Glue, and EMR to collect, transform, and store data for analytics or business intelligence. Their responsibilities often include ensuring data reliability, scalability, and security while optimizing data workflows and integrating various cloud-based tools. AWS Data Engineers collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to enable data-driven decision-making. They typically have strong skills in programming, cloud infrastructure, and database management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AWS data engineer?

To thrive as an AWS Data Engineer, you need strong skills in data modeling, ETL processes, SQL, and a solid understanding of AWS services, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with AWS tools like Redshift, Glue, S3, Lambda, and certifications such as AWS Certified Data Analytics are highly beneficial. Problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for collaborating with teams and managing complex data projects. Mastery of these skills ensures efficient data pipeline development, reliable data solutions, and the ability to support business intelligence in a cloud environment.

What is the difference between Aws Data Engineer vs Data Analyst?

AspectAws Data EngineerData Analyst
Required CredentialsAWS certifications, SQL, Python, data engineering skillsSQL, Excel, data visualization tools, sometimes basic programming
Work EnvironmentCloud platforms, big data environments, data pipelinesBusiness intelligence tools, spreadsheets, reporting dashboards
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, cloud service providers, enterprises using AWSMarketing, finance, healthcare, and other industries analyzing data

While both roles work with data, Aws Data Engineers focus on building and maintaining data pipelines in cloud environments using AWS tools, whereas Data Analysts interpret data to generate insights and reports. The roles often complement each other in data-driven organizations.

Is AWS Data Engineer in demand?

AWS Data Engineers are in high demand due to the increasing adoption of cloud data platforms and the need for scalable data processing solutions. Skills in AWS services like S3, Redshift, and Glue, along with data modeling and ETL expertise, are highly sought after by employers across various industries.

What is the salary of AWS Data Engineer?

The salary of an AWS Data Engineer typically ranges from $90,000 to $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and certifications such as AWS Certified Data Analytics. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced engineers with specialized skills can earn higher salaries.

Job description

Cloud Platform Developer Engineer (AWS CDK/TypeScript) with Java - Remote

Apply now Job no: 504646
Work type: Full Time Regular
Location: Remote
Categories: Information Technology

Mutual of Omaha is seeking a Cloud Platform Developer Engineer who brings both strong AWS cloud infrastructure expertise and hands-on Java software development experience. This distinction matters. In this role you will own and operate the AWS platform that powers application development teams across Workplace Solutions, author reusable AWS CDK constructs and shared libraries in TypeScript, and serve as the technical resource those developers call when they are stuck - whether the problem lives in the platform or in their Java code.

You will work at the intersection of cloud engineering, software development, and platform enablement, partnering with teams across the organization to simplify cloud complexity and accelerate delivery. You will think like a developer, build shared libraries that other engineers consume, and bring a software engineering mindset to every infrastructure problem. We are especially interested in someone with a curious mindset who actively explores and incorporates emerging technologies including AI to continuously evolve our platform capabilities.

If you have spent your career exclusively writing infrastructure YAML and Terraform HCL with no Java software development experience, this role is likely not the right fit. If you have a strong cloud infrastructure background and have also built shared libraries, authored CDK constructs in TypeScript, or worked closely alongside application development teams to solve problems at the code level, we would love to connect. Apply today.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU:

  • Estimated Salary: Engineer II: $115,000 - $135,000, plus annual bonus opportunity
  • Engineer III: $130,000 - $150,000, plus annual bonus opportunity
  • 401(k) plan with a 2% company contribution and 6% company match.
  • Work-life balance with vacation, personal time and paid holidays. See our benefits and perks page for details.
  • This role is classified as remote; however, periodic in-person attendance will be required at times for activities such as quarterly or project planning, training, or other business-critical meetings.
Applicants for this position must not now, nor at any point in the future, require sponsorship for employment.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Write production-grade TypeScript using AWS CDK to design, build, test, and maintain Infrastructure as Code for public cloud environments
  • Build and maintain shared construct libraries and platform services consumed by engineering teams across the department, treating infrastructure like software with versioning, testing, and documentation
  • Serve as the cloud subject matter expert, enabling development teams to achieve the organization's cloud vision through hands-on guidance and troubleshooting
  • Configure and manage common cloud services in production environments
  • Collaborate across teams to uncover delivery pain points and drive platform improvements
  • Apply software engineering best practices including code reviews, unit testing, design patterns, and clean architecture to infrastructure code

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

  • 5+ years of hands-on development experience using an object-oriented language, TypeScript strongly preferred
  • Experience writing Java code
  • Two or more of the following competencies:
    • Infrastructure as a Code (Preferred: AWS CDK, Cloud Formation)
    • Containerization with Docker (Preferred: Kubernetes, Elastic Container Service (ECS), Fargate)
    • Databases (Preferred: Postgres, RDS Aurora, MongoDB)
    • Message/Data Streaming (Preferred: AWS MSK, Kafka)
    • GitHub, GitHub Actions, Git for version control
  • Experience building shared libraries, reusable constructs, or internal platform services used by other engineering teams
  • Experience with distributed cloud platform configuration, deployment, and lifecycle management automation tools.
  • Understanding of security and compliance for a cloud environment.
  • Experience building/managing cloud services by automating/orchestrating complex processes using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) within a single cloud environment.
  • You promote a culture of diversity and inclusion, value different ideas and opinions, and listen courageously, remaining curious in all that you do.
  • Able to work remotely with access to a high-speed internet connection and located in the United States or Puerto Rico.

PREFERRED:

  • Prior experience on a platform engineering or cloud enablement team
  • Familiarity with software engineering best practices: design patterns, unit testing infrastructure code with Jest or CDK assertions, code reviews, and documentation
  • Strong interpersonal communication with both technical and nontechnical audiences
  • Curiosity about and hands-on experimentation with AI and emerging technologies
  • Strong interpersonal communication with both technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Prior experience with cloud governance or enablement initiatives.
  • Proficiency in Software Engineering and best practices.

We value diverse experience, skills, and passion for innovation. If your experience aligns with the listed requirements, please apply!
