What are AWS Associates?

AWS Associates typically refers to individuals who have earned an AWS Certified Associate-level certification, such as the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate, AWS Certified Developer – Associate, or AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate. These certifications validate a person’s ability to design, deploy, and manage applications on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform. Earning an AWS Associate certification demonstrates foundational to intermediate cloud expertise and is often a stepping stone to more advanced AWS certifications or cloud-related job roles. Employers value AWS Associates for their proven knowledge of cloud concepts, best practices, and AWS services.

What is the difference between Aws Associate vs Aws Cloud Practitioner?

The AWS Cloud Practitioner is an entry-level certification providing a broad overview of AWS services, ideal for non-technical roles or beginners. Both certifications are valuable but serve different career paths within the AWS ecosystem.

What are some common challenges faced by AWS Associates when supporting cloud infrastructure, and how can they effectively overcome them?

AWS Associates often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting connectivity issues, ensuring security compliance, and managing cost optimization in dynamic cloud environments. To effectively overcome these, it's important to stay updated with AWS best practices, leverage automation tools for monitoring and alerts, and collaborate closely with other IT team members. Proactively documenting solutions and participating in regular knowledge-sharing sessions can further help AWS Associates resolve issues efficiently and grow their expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AWS Associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AWS Associate, you need a solid understanding of cloud computing concepts, networking, security, and the AWS platform, typically validated by the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate or AWS Certified Developer – Associate certification. Familiarity with AWS services (such as EC2, S3, and Lambda), the AWS Management Console, and basic scripting or automation tools like AWS CLI and CloudFormation is essential. Strong problem-solving, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively are important soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure that you can design, implement, and maintain reliable cloud solutions that meet organizational goals.

Job description

Job Description: Senior AWS Cloud Architect

Location: Wichita, KS (Hybrid)

Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Cloud Architect to spearhead our enterprise cloud transformation. In this role, you will design and execute our migration strategy from legacy on-premises infrastructure to Amazon Web Services (AWS). Beyond migration, you will establish robust cloud governance frameworks, define operational guardrails for our infrastructure teams, and architect scalable data solutions that fuel our business intelligence, analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

Cloud Migration & Modernization: Lead the architectural assessment, strategy, and execution of transitioning legacy, on-premises workloads to AWS. Utilize frameworks such as the AWS Well-Architected Framework to ensure secure, high-performing, resilient, and efficient infrastructure.

Cloud Networking: Partner with network architect to design and implement cloud networking architecture. Set up VPC peering. Evaluate the need for, and implement, a Direct Connect with AWS.

Cloud Governance & Guardrails: Design, implement, and maintain enterprise-wide cloud landing zone and governance policies. Define Identity and Access Management (IAM) strategies, security baselines, and resource lifecycle policies to guide the Systems Engineering and Operations teams in secure, standardized resource provisioning.

Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Champion automation by establishing IaC standards and CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure deployment, ensuring the Systems Engineering team can safely and consistently manage cloud resources.

Data & AI Architecture: Architect scalable, secure data platforms-including Data Lakes and Modern Data Warehouses-to aggregate diverse data streams. Ensure the underlying infrastructure optimized for high-performance data analytics, reporting pipelines, and advanced AI/ML modeling.

Cost Optimization & Performance Tuning: Implement FinOps practices to monitor, analyze, and optimize cloud spend while ensuring optimal system performance and scalability.

Required Qualifications:

Experience: 7+ years in IT infrastructure/architecture, with at least 3+ years specifically focused on AWS cloud architecture and large-scale migrations.

AWS Expertise: Deep technical knowledge of core AWS services (EC2, S3, RDS, VPC, IAM, Route 53) and specialized data/analytics services (AWS Glue, Redshift, Athena, EMR, SageMaker, Amazon Bedrock).

Automation & Provisioning: Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools (e.g., Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, AWS CDK) and configuration management.

Governance Frameworks: Proven experience setting up AWS Organizations, AWS Control Tower, and Service Control Policies (SCPs) for enterprise compliance.

Certifications: One or more of the following: AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional or Associate, AWS DevOps Engineer - Professional or Associate

Preferred Skills:

Familiarity with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Amazon ECS/EKS).

Strong understanding of data governance, data privacy regulations, and security compliance frameworks.

Excellent collaboration skills to bridge the gap between technical operations teams and data science/analytics business units.
