Description

Director-Planning, Design & Construction Mgmt

The University of Alabama at Birmingham

Job Summary:

Directs and manages the team of facilities staff, consultants, and contractors responsible for the overall development of larger planning, design and construction programs, campus master planning, and landscape planning. Communicates project requirements, makes recommendations, and monitors project design and development related to major capital projects.

Establishes, manages, communicates, and updates the priorities, budgets and schedules for the design and construction of major capital projects. Solicits proposals, considers contract requirements, and manages the activities of architects, engineers, and other consultants. Assists the AVP with the selection of architects for major capital projects. Communicates and coordinates project design and construction activities with university administration and clients. Prepares project information required for UAB administration and the Board of Trustees, including status reports, project summaries, and planning reports. Identifies, researches, and prepares applications for government funding for planning projects.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Provides primary leadership for capital planning support and reporting, campus planning, facilities and project programming, business development and planning, comprehensive campaign support for facility initiatives, special projects and associated reports and submissions required to facilitate Board of Trustees approvals in accordance with Board Rule 415.

2. Provides direction and oversight of scope, priorities, budgets, and schedules for multiple capital projects, ranging from small renovations to the planning, design and construction of large-land-area studies and related construction projects.

3. Coordinates and guides the selection process for design firms and construction contractors for capital projects.

4. Manages the team that reviews contracts to ensure compliance with contractual terms and University standards. Ensures quality planning and design project scopes, schedules, and budgets. Develop strategies for the rapid completion of emergency projects when needed.

5. Manages the team responsible for maintaining project records, databases, as-built drawings, meeting minutes and bid proposals, as well as knowledge of current trends and developments.

6. Performs other duties as assigned.

Salary Pay Range: $ 104,045.00- 169,075.00

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture, Architecture, Planning, Building Science, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field and eight (8) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for the education requirement.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineering (PE) registration in Alabama or eligibility to obtain registration through reciprocity from another state’s licensing board strongly preferred
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Strong strategic planning and leadership abilities
  • Experience leading teams responsible for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, building automation and related systems.
  • Experience with strategic campus planning, capital planning, and the management of complex capital improvement programs
  • Experience in higher education, an academic medical center, or a similarly complex institutional environment
  • Knowledge of project programming, facility assessments, capital budgeting, consultant and contractor procurement, contract administration, and project delivery methods
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and consensus-building skills
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills
  • Sound decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative leadership style with experience developing high-performing teams.
