What is an AVP controller?

AVP Controllers, or Assistant Vice President Controllers, are senior financial professionals responsible for overseeing accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls within an organization. They often assist the VP or CFO in managing budgets, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, and providing strategic financial analysis. AVP Controllers play a key role in preparing financial statements, coordinating audits, and improving financial processes to support business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AVP controller?

To thrive as an AVP Controller, you need strong expertise in accounting principles, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting or finance and a CPA certification. Proficiency in enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems such as SAP or Oracle, as well as advanced Excel skills, is commonly required. Exceptional leadership, analytical thinking, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure accurate financial management, compliance, and the ability to lead teams and support strategic decision-making within an organization.

What are common challenges faced by AVP controllers in managing cross-departmental financial reporting?

AVP Controllers often encounter challenges such as aligning reporting standards across multiple departments, ensuring timely and accurate data consolidation, and navigating varying levels of financial literacy among team members. About the Company:
Security Benefit is a leader in the U.S. retirement market with more than $60 billion in assets under management. We offer opportunities to thrive, innovate, and make an impact. As part of our team, you'll play a key role in driving the future of the U.S. retirement industry. Security Benefit is a PLACE where we promise to help our customers To and Through Retirement®.
We're proud to have been recognized as one of the best in the business:
  • Named to Ward's 50 list of top-performing life-health insurance companies
  • Recognized on list of Ingram's Top 100 Private Companies in the Kansas City area in 2024

About the Role:
As a Senior Data Governance Analyst - Unstructured Data & AI Readiness you will serve as a recognized subject matter expert on Security Benefit's Data Governance team, owning the operationalization of governance practices for unstructured content - including documents, email, collaboration platforms, and cloud repositories. You will ensure enterprise information is trusted, compliant, and optimized for AI and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) use cases, while driving Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) program execution across the organization. This role sits at the intersection of traditional records and retention governance and next-generation AI readiness, making it a critical enabler of Security Benefit's data strategy and its $60 billion asset management mission.
This role reports to the AVP, Data Strategy & Enablement and sits within the Data Governance chapter, providing governance services and standards across Agile Product Teams. It can be performed remotely or in a hybrid capacity from our Topeka or Overland Park, Kansas offices.
  • Lead operationalization of unstructured data governance across AWS-based cloud platforms, SharePoint, OneDrive, and other enterprise content stores - supporting Data Owners and Stewards in classifying, sensitivity-labeling, and retention-tagging content for AI fitness, regulatory compliance, and eDiscovery readiness
  • Enable trusted use of unstructured data in AI, analytics, and RAG solutions; collaborate with the Gen AI & Innovation team and enterprise Risk function to provide governance inputs into AI intake processes, risk assessments, and data asset inventories
  • Execute information lifecycle workflows including classification, retention scheduling, disposition, and audit readiness across enterprise content platforms; administer legal hold placement and release under Legal's direction
  • Support administration and user adoption of Microsoft Purview for sensitivity labeling and information protection across Microsoft 365 and connected platforms
  • Develop and maintain metadata taxonomies, classification schemas, and controlled vocabularies for unstructured content; administer and extend enterprise data catalog coverage to include unstructured content assets
  • Serve as governance SME for Security Benefit's FSx-to-SharePoint migration initiative, ensuring governance standards - site architecture, content taxonomy, sensitivity labeling, and retention controls - are designed into the platform from the ground up
  • Develop and advocate for automated and AI/ML-assisted tagging and classification approaches using Microsoft Purview auto-labeling, SharePoint Syntex, and comparable platform-native capabilities to minimize manual burden on business users
  • Partner with Data Owners, Stewards, Legal, Privacy, Platform Architecture, and data teams to design workflows and automation supporting unstructured data classification, retention controls, and access governance
  • Develop and deliver training materials, adoption guides, and governance communications to business and technology stakeholders on unstructured data governance standards and tooling
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to IC 1/IC 2 Governance Analysts on classification, metadata, and stewardship practices

What We're Looking For:
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Management, Data Science, Library & Information Science, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field
  • 5-7 years of experience in data governance, information management, records management, data operations, or a closely related discipline
  • Working knowledge of unstructured data governance concepts including metadata management, content classification, sensitivity labeling, information lifecycle management, legal hold, and records retention
  • Hands-on experience with one or more enterprise content platforms: SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Slack, or comparable cloud content repositories
  • Demonstrated SharePoint Online expertise including site architecture, content types, managed metadata term stores, permission modeling, and document library governance; experience supporting SharePoint migrations from on-premises or legacy file share environments (e.g., FSx) strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Purview (or predecessor tools: Azure Information Protection, MIP) for sensitivity labeling and compliance management; willingness to develop deep proficiency required
  • Automation-first orientation: evaluates AI/ML-assisted and platform-native automation options (e.g., Purview auto-labeling, SharePoint Syntex, Power Automate) before recommending manual processes
  • Exposure to data catalog or metadata management tooling (e.g., Collibra, Alation, Informatica, or similar); willingness to develop proficiency in Security Benefit's selected platform required
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; comfortable operating in ambiguous, fast-moving environments with competing priorities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; proven ability to translate complex governance concepts for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Understanding of AI/ML governance concepts, including data readiness for RAG architectures, is a meaningful differentiator
  • Experience in financial services or a regulated data environment preferred; familiarity with SQL, Python, or scripting for data profiling and quality validation a plus
