Job description

Burnsville-Eagan-Savage District 191 is a future-forward school district committed to removing barriers and forging unique pathways for learning and enrichment for all students. We create engaging programs, services and opportunities that encourage self discovery and preparedness, inspiring the pursuit of life-long learning and exploration.

One91 is a place where staff members are valued and can make an impact. We're looking for candidates with an innovative, creative approach to education that will spark wonder and curiosity in our learners. We want relationship-builders who are dedicated and passionate about making a difference for our students and community.

Position Overview: AVID Tutor
  • Hours: 8:00 AM - 1:30 PM
  • Days: 2-3 days a week (Wednesday, Friday, plus one more)
  • Compensation/benefits: $19.00 per hour

District One91 secondary schools offer AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a college and career prep program designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year colleges. AVID serves all students by ensuring they acquire the organizational and study skills needed for them to be successful. Students learn academic strategies to develop critical thinking skills and ask probing questions. AVID Tutors support in the AVID elective class by guiding collaborative study groups, providing organization and critical thinking support, and generally developing relationships with students that foster a connectedness to school and the school community.

  AVID Goals:
  • Support students in rigorous coursework
  • Teach academic and social skills not targeted in other classes
  • Provide intensive support with in-class tutors and a strong student/teacher relationship
  • Create a positive peer group for students
  • Develop a sense of hope and personal achievement through hard work and determination
  AVID Elective Class:

In the AVID elective class, students learn skills that will help prepare them to be successful in advanced courses in both high school and college. Students focus on writing, critical thinking, collaboration, reading, note-taking, study skills and organization.  Twice a week, tutors will come into the AVID classroom to help answer questions that students have about difficult topics. As part of the course, students will also explore potential careers and even visit colleges and universities!  Although AVID serves all students, it focuses on the least served students in the academic middle. Determination is a key component of the AVID program.

Qualifications:
  •  Experience with AVID or working in an academic setting are highly preferred.
Resources:
  • Discover One91
  • Commitment to Equity
  • The One91 Learning Experience - A Pathways Approach
  • Benefits of Working in One91
  • AVID at Nicollet Middle School
Application Process:
  • Our online application system offers the opportunity to upload additional information, such as a cover letter, resume, references and transcripts. Paper or e-mail copies of these materials will not be accepted.
  • Interviews will be conducted with candidates that best meet the current needs of the school.
  • Review of materials will start immediately.
  • The position will be filled on an undesignated time-frame when, and not until, the right candidate emerges.

A diverse workforce fuels innovation and allows us to better understand, communicate with, and educate our students. District One91 will not deny anyone the opportunity for training or employment because of sex, race, religion, color, creed, national origin, marital status, age, sexual preference, disability, or status with regard to public assistance.
Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they meet every one of the qualifications as described in a job description. We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job, and that candidate may be one who comes from a less traditional background. We would encourage you to apply, even if you don't believe you meet every one of our qualifications described.
