Living in Melbourne

One of the most populous cities in Florida’s Brevard County with about 87,500 residents, Melbourne is a thriving community offering a warm climate, picturesque beaches, and a unique blend of a laid-back lifestyle and hi-tech science and innovation.

With a diverse mix of working professionals, families and retirees calling Melbourne home, the area has a wide variety of housing and rental options with an overall cost of living close the national average and lower than many Florida cities — including the benefit of no state income tax. A strong sense of community and highly rated schools make Melbourne a great place to raise a family.

Situated along Florida’s “Space Coast,” Melbourne is well-known for its proximity to the Cape Canaveral’s Kennedy Space Center and the Port Canaveral cruise terminal. The city also offers a host of other attractions, including a vibrant arts district; an historic downtown area with restaurants, bars and shops; nearby concert and theater venues; the world-class Brevard Zoo; and beautiful parks and beaches. Its location along the Indian River Lagoon, an estuary that separates the Space Coast from the Atlantic Ocean, provides an abundance of year-round water activities, including surfing, kayaking, boating, fishing and manatee watching.

The Melbourne Orlando International Airport offers flights to several Southeast and Midwest cities as well as the United Kingdom. Convenient driving access to other popular Florida destinations, such as Orlando, and Miami, makes for easy day trips or weekend getaways. Brightline, a high-speed train connecting Orlando and Miami, has plans for a future station in nearby Cocoa for yet another travel option.
