What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AV Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AV Manager, you need expertise in audiovisual technology, event coordination, and project management, often supported by a relevant degree or AVIXA CTS certification. Familiarity with AV control systems (like Crestron or Extron), video conferencing platforms, and troubleshooting hardware/software issues is crucial. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help in managing teams and collaborating with clients. These skills ensure seamless AV operations, high-quality presentations, and successful event outcomes.

What are the typical challenges an AV Manager faces when coordinating events, and how can they overcome them?

AV Managers often encounter challenges such as last-minute technical issues, coordinating with multiple vendors, and managing tight event schedules. To overcome these, effective communication with event organizers and technical teams is crucial, as is having contingency plans in place for equipment failures or unexpected changes. Staying updated with the latest AV technology and maintaining detailed checklists can also help ensure smooth event execution. Proactive problem-solving and adaptability are key traits for success in this dynamic role.

About Us:

Founded in 1975, Salas O’Brien is an employee-owned engineering and professional services firm focused on achieving impact for our clients, our team, and the world. We know that tomorrow’s requirements are today’s opportunities, and we are here to design lasting solutions for pressing challenges.

We work across a variety of industries providing integrated engineering and consulting services. Our specialized experience includes design for data centers, healthcare, science and technology, high-rise buildings, clean energy, education, and other building types as well as structural and building sciences, infrastructure asset management, advanced robotics, and more.

Our technical expertise is paired with an exceptional team of business development, human resources, finance and accounting, information technology, and marketing professionals, all of whom play a key role in bringing our commitments to life every day.

Job Summary: Salas O’Brien is looking for a AV Consultant to join our Technology team. The AV Consultant will work directly with senior AV consultants, project managers, and clients to help identify their needs and develop system designs that provide an exceptional experience for a range of venue types including legislative spaces, conference centers, auditoriums, multipurpose event spaces, meeting/conference rooms, and others. Salas O’Brien’s consulting team follows a comprehensive project cycle approach that encourages our consultants to be involved from needs assessment through commissioning and across all aspects of the design, engineering, and integration of the systems in the process. We are looking for someone that is passionate about AV and technology and has a deep focus on customer service.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, engineer, and assist with commissioning audiovisual and media technology systems.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with others on the AV team and our clients to identify needs and develop comprehensive audiovisual system designs.
  • Think outside the box to come up with creative, practical, technically feasible, and financially responsible solutions to our client’s challenges.
  • Produce AV system design documentation that includes line diagrams, specifications, cost estimates, and supporting documents.
  • Perform field engineering tasks, including site surveys, comprehensive systems commissioning, sound system tuning, device configuration, and troubleshooting.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Three to five years of experience—either as an AV consultant or design engineer.
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience in AV systems design including audio, video, control, and AV networking systems.
  • Experience with and strong understanding of AV over IP platforms and video display technologies.
  • Experience with audio DSP systems and modern AV control systems is required.
  • Experience in creating and manipulating drawings/diagrams in AutoCAD. Experience in Revit preferred.
  • AVIXA CTS-D certified (or within the first year of employment).
  • Experience in the configuration and setup of digital audio, video, and AV control platforms is highly desired.

Location: Boulder, CO (preferred) or Washington, DC

Travel: Up to 10 - 25%

Compensation & Benefits:

The expected base salary range for this role is $85,000 - $110,000 USD per year. Actual compensation will be determined based on a number of factors including skills, experience, qualifications, and location.

This role is also eligible for performance-based bonuses and a comprehensive U.S. based benefits package, including:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and company holidays
  • Wellness programs and employee assistance resources
  • Professional development support
