Position Summary :

The purpose of the Grossing Technician I is to provide general assistance to Pathologists' Assistants (PA) and pathologists in the surgical grossing department and the Cellnetix autopsy site service to ensure smooth workflow of the entire in a fast-paced environment with a high volume of work. Under the supervision of the Grossing Supervisor and general technical direction of pathologists, the Gross Tech I is responsible for the accurate description and dissection of simple surgical specimens. Under the supervision of the Autopsy PA and general technical direction of pathologists, the Autopsy Gross Tech I is responsible for assistance in multiple procedural tasks in the Autopsy Suite (multiple Hospital Sites). The Autopsy Grossing Technician must adhere to HIPAA standards. Due to various environmental hazards presented in the workplace such as formalin, communicable disease, fresh human tissue, body transfer in the autopsy suite, etc., employees must also adhere to strict Standard Operating Procedures and Personal Protective Equipment requirements.

Position Schedule : M-F, 6:00am - 2:30pm. Hours can vary dependent on autopsies. Autopsy sites might include St. Joe's (Tacoma), Tacoma General, St. Peter's (Olympia), Swedish Edmonds, Providence Colby Everett. Candidates are eligible for reimbursement for mileage between Tukwila and other sites.

Essential Duties:

  • Gross simple to moderate complexity specimens
  • Troubleshoot dictation, accessioning, technical & communication issues
  • Gross photography
  • Handling of certain tissue types for special studies
  • Assist Autopsy PA with body transfer, prepare autopsy suite, and prepare autopsy materials prior to procedure
  • Record notes and measurements during autopsy as directed by Autopsy PA and pathologists; additional assistance with evisceration and dissection as directed.
  • Assist Autopsy PA with body closure, body transfer, autopsy suite clean-up, and collection of materials after procedure is finished.
  • Travel to multiple Western Washington CellNetix Hospital Client sites.
  • Assist Autopsy PA with ancillary record keeping, tissue retention, and tissue disposal.
  • Assist in training of new staff as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Basic PC skills including Microsoft Office Suite, and ability to learn new software
  • Demonstrate ability to perform effectively under pressure
  • Adaptable
  • Ability to focus on task at hand

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree science related field (preferably biology or physiology); OR
  • Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include:
    • 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses
    • OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
    • In addition, the individual must have laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLA, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above)
    • OR at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity
