What does an autonomous systems engineer do?

An Autonomous Systems Engineer designs, develops, and optimizes self-governing systems that operate with minimal human intervention. This includes robotics, self-driving vehicles, drones, and AI-driven automation. They work with sensors, machine learning, control systems, and software to ensure reliable decision-making and adaptability in dynamic environments. Their role often involves testing, simulation, and integration of hardware and software components to improve system efficiency and safety.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an autonomous systems engineer?

To thrive as an Autonomous Systems Engineer, you need strong expertise in robotics, control systems, sensor integration, and proficiency in languages such as Python or C++, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation tools like ROS (Robot Operating System), MATLAB/Simulink, and experience deploying algorithms on embedded hardware are typically required. Effective problem-solving, strong teamwork, and clear communication are standout soft skills in this field. These competencies are crucial for designing reliable autonomous solutions, troubleshooting complex issues, and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams for successful system deployment.

What are some common challenges faced by autonomous systems engineers and how are they addressed?

Autonomous Systems Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating diverse hardware and software components, achieving robust sensor fusion, and ensuring system reliability in unpredictable environments. Addressing these challenges typically involves rigorous simulation testing, iterative algorithm development, and close collaboration with cross-functional teams in software, hardware, and systems engineering. Engineers must also stay updated with advancements in machine learning and robotics to continually refine and enhance system capabilities. Employers support these efforts through ongoing training, collaborative problem-solving sessions, and investment in advanced prototyping resources.

Job description

Job Summary:
Forterra is a company focused on transforming the battlefield through autonomous systems. They are seeking a Senior Network Systems Engineer to deploy, operate, and troubleshoot Vektor's network infrastructure across field sites and cloud environments.
Responsibilities:
โ€ข Design, deploy, and maintain L2/L3 network infrastructure across Vektor's install base โ€” routing, switching, VLANs, trunking, QoS, and VPN tunnels.
โ€ข Configure and operate Linux-based network appliances using systemd-networkd, Netplan, iptables, StrongSwan, and WireGuard.
โ€ข Build and maintain infrastructure-as-code (Ansible, Terraform) to automate provisioning and configuration of network and compute resources.
โ€ข Collect, analyze, and act on network telemetry using Grafana, Telegraf, and related tooling.
โ€ข Deploy and manage AWS GovCloud and Commercial infrastructure (EC2, VPC, Transit Gateway, Security Groups) that supports Vektor's cloud-side services.
โ€ข Travel to customer and field sites (~50%) for installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and ongoing support of deployed systems.
โ€ข Collaborate across engineering in design reviews and deployment planning, mentor teammates, and drive best practices for network operations and automation.
Qualifications:
Required:
โ€ข 5+ years of hands-on network engineering experience (vendor-agnostic routers and switches)
โ€ข Strong L2/L3 fundamentals โ€” routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, or Babel), VLANs, trunking, QoS, NAT/PAT, multicast, IPv4 + IPv6
โ€ข Strong Linux systems experience โ€” systemd, networkd, Netplan, iptables, SSH, Docker
โ€ข Experience with site-to-site and remote access VPN (IPsec / StrongSwan, WireGuard)
โ€ข Hands-on infrastructure automation (Ansible or Terraform) and scripting (Bash, Python, or Go)
โ€ข Working knowledge of cryptography fundamentals โ€” PKI, IPsec, FIPS compliance requirements
โ€ข AWS experience โ€” VPC design, EC2, Security Groups, Transit Gateway
โ€ข Willingness and ability to travel ~50% domestically to field and customer sites
Preferred:
โ€ข Experience with MANET radios and mesh networking in defense or tactical environments
โ€ข Familiarity with NIST/CMMC compliance frameworks
โ€ข Experience with VXLAN overlays
โ€ข Knowledge of IGMP/PIM for multicast routing
โ€ข Experience with DHCP/DNS infrastructure at scale
โ€ข Exposure to telemetry pipelines (InfluxDB, Telegraf, Grafana)
Company:
Forterra delivers autonomous mission systems for defense. Founded in 2002, the company is headquartered in Clarksburg, USA, with a team of 501-1000 employees. The company is currently Growth Stage.
