Job description

Job Title: Yard Worker

Job Description

The Yard Worker inspects and documents vehicles as they arrive on site, ensuring accurate inventory and condition records for an outdoor automotive yard. This role involves working independently in all weather conditions, using handheld technology to capture photos and data, and supporting efficient processing of vehicles for a large, technology-driven marketplace.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect vehicles as they are delivered to the yard, ensuring each unit is properly checked in.
  • Perform a visual inspection of each vehicle, noting overall condition and any obvious damage.
  • Take clear, detailed photos of vehicles for use on the company website.
  • Complete an inventory of each vehicle, including confirmation of glass condition and presence of body panels such as fenders, bumpers, hoods, and trunks.
  • Check the interior of each vehicle and document key components such as the steering wheel, seats, and radio.
  • Attempt to start each vehicle and document whether it starts successfully.
  • Use a battery pack to attempt to jump-start vehicles that do not start initially and record the outcome.
  • Enter all inspection, inventory, and condition information into a handheld device similar to a tablet in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Use basic computer skills to support data entry and inventory processes.
  • Work independently in the yard with minimal direct supervision while maintaining productivity and accuracy.
  • Communicate with team members and supervisors via handheld radio when support or clarification is needed.
  • Follow safety guidelines and use provided safety gear and gloves while working in the yard.
  • Adapt quickly to new processes and procedures during the initial training period and on an ongoing basis.
  • Support general yard operations as needed, including basic general labor related to vehicle handling and inventory.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to visually inspect vehicles and identify key components such as fenders, bumpers, hoods, trunks, steering wheels, seats, and radios.
  • Experience using a smartphone, tablet, or similar handheld device for data entry and information capture.
  • Basic computer skills sufficient to enter, update, and review inventory and vehicle information.
  • Ability to work independently with little to no direct supervision while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Comfort working outdoors 100% of the time in varying weather conditions.
  • Willingness and ability to attempt to start vehicles and use a battery pack to jump-start when necessary.
  • Capacity to learn job tasks quickly, especially within a short training period of approximately 3 days.
  • General labor experience, particularly in environments involving physical work and outdoor tasks.
  • Warehouse or inventory experience related to tracking and documenting items is beneficial.
  • Ability to communicate effectively via handheld radio with team members and supervisors.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • No formal training is required for this position, making it suitable for candidates with strong practical skills and a willingness to learn.
  • Previous experience in automotive environments, such as working with cars or in a yard or lot setting, is an advantage.
  • Experience in general labor or warehouse inventory work is helpful.
  • Ability to adapt to technology-driven processes, including digital bidding and vehicle merchandising systems.
  • Comfort working in a casual but safety-focused environment, following guidelines for attire and conduct.
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail when documenting vehicle condition and inventory.
  • Reliability and punctuality to support regular weekday operations and occasional Saturday overtime when needed.
