Automotive User Experience Design information

What is automotive user experience design?

Automotive User Experience (UX) Design is the process of creating intuitive, enjoyable, and effective interactions between people and vehicles. This field focuses on designing digital interfaces like touchscreens, instrument clusters, and infotainment systems, as well as overall in-car experiences, to ensure safety, usability, and satisfaction for drivers and passengers. UX designers in the automotive industry combine knowledge of human behavior, technology, and automotive trends to develop solutions that enhance comfort, convenience, and engagement. Their work is crucial in adapting vehicles to new technologies, such as electric and autonomous cars.

What are some of the unique challenges faced by automotive user experience designers when working on in-vehicle interfaces?

Automotive User Experience Designers must balance safety regulations, driver distraction concerns, and technological innovation when creating in-vehicle interfaces. Unlike traditional digital design roles, they work closely with engineers, product managers, and sometimes regulatory bodies to ensure that designs are intuitive without compromising safety. Designers often conduct user testing in real or simulated driving environments to validate their concepts. Collaboration across disciplines is essential, as is staying updated on emerging automotive technologies and evolving customer expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automotive user experience designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automotive User Experience Designer, you need expertise in user-centered design, interaction design, and a background in automotive engineering or industrial design. Familiarity with design software like Sketch, Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and prototyping tools, as well as knowledge of HMI systems and automotive UX standards, is typically required. Strong collaboration, creative problem-solving, and excellent communication skills help designers translate complex requirements into intuitive in-vehicle experiences. These skills ensure that automotive interfaces are safe, innovative, and user-friendly, enhancing driver satisfaction and brand competitiveness.

Job description

Description

About the Role

Meyer Distributing is looking for a talented, high-energy UI/UX Designer to help shape the future of our custom-built e-commerce platform.

This is not a template-driven Shopify role. Our e-commerce experience is designed, developed, and maintained in-house, giving you the opportunity to make a direct and visible impact across a large, complex shopping experience.

You'll work closely with software development, merchandising, marketing, and business leadership to design fast, intuitive, conversion-focused experiences across desktop and mobile. We're looking for someone who moves quickly, has strong visual instincts, cares about the details, and is comfortable taking ownership from idea through implementation.

What You'll Do

  • Design polished, intuitive, conversion-focused experiences across desktop and mobile.
  • Own UX/UI improvements across the full customer journey, including homepage and landing pages; navigation and site search; category and product listing pages; product detail pages; cart and checkout; promotions and merchandising experiences; customer accounts; and order tracking and post-purchase experiences.
  • Turn business goals, customer feedback, and technical requirements into user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs.
  • Build and evolve a scalable design system in Figma, including components, patterns, specifications, and responsive behaviors.
  • Work directly with developers to ensure designs are practical, accurately implemented, and delivered at a high level of quality.
  • Contribute directly to front-end development within our .NET stack, helping translate designs into responsive, production-ready interfaces.
  • Partner with merchandising and marketing teams on product launches, promotions, campaigns, and seasonal initiatives.
  • Use analytics, customer feedback, and behavioral data to identify friction points and improve conversion.
  • Participate in design reviews, QA, and post-launch iteration to ensure the final experience matches the intended design.
  • Help establish a fast, practical design process that improves both customer experience and development speed.

What We're Looking For

  • Professional experience designing responsive websites, web applications, or digital products.
  • A strong portfolio that demonstrates thoughtful UX decisions, clean visual design, and real-world shipped work.
  • Strong proficiency in Figma, including components, libraries, design systems, prototyping, and developer handoff.
  • Required hands-on development experience in a .NET environment, including ASP.NET and C#.
  • Experience building or contributing to responsive front-end interfaces using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern UI practices.
  • Familiarity with Angular, React, or comparable front-end frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of user flows, interaction design, visual hierarchy, typography, color, and responsive design.
  • Understanding of e-commerce experiences and how design affects product discovery, purchasing decisions, and conversion.
  • Experience designing for marketing, sales, customer experience, or conversion-focused digital products is strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of how design supports lead generation, merchandising, customer acquisition, customer retention, and online revenue.
  • Ability to create clear, compelling experiences that balance brand presentation, customer needs, and business performance.
  • Ability to work quickly, accept feedback well, and turn ideas into clear, high-quality deliverables.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort collaborating directly with both technical and nontechnical teams.
  • A high level of ownership, curiosity, and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing and developing for a custom e-commerce platform.
  • Experience with large product catalogs, site search, product filtering, or B2B e-commerce.
  • Experience with usability testing, analytics, A/B testing, heatmaps, or conversion-rate optimization.
  • Experience with e-commerce marketing, sales funnels, customer journey optimization, email or campaign landing pages, or customer-facing self-service tools.
  • Experience partnering with sales, marketing, merchandising, or customer service teams to improve the end-to-end customer experience.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards and responsive design best practices.
  • Experience working in an Agile software development environment.
  • Experience with Git and modern development workflows.

What Success Looks Like

  • Customers can find products, understand product information, and complete purchases more easily.
  • New experiences launch quickly without sacrificing usability, visual quality, or technical feasibility.
  • The e-commerce experience feels consistent, modern, and easy to use across desktop and mobile.
  • Developers receive clear designs and practical specifications that reduce back-and-forth during implementation.
  • The design system becomes a reliable foundation for future features and faster development.
  • Design decisions are supported by customer needs, business goals, analytics, and measurable outcomes.

Why Meyer Distributing

This is a high-ownership role with the ability to make a meaningful impact on a major e-commerce platform. You will work directly with an internal development organization and have the freedom to improve the customer experience without being limited by an off-the-shelf platform.

If you enjoy moving quickly, building great digital experiences, and seeing your work directly influence a business, this role is an opportunity to do exactly that.

Meyer Distributing is an equal opportunity employer and considers qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other legally protected status.
