Description
The New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) is a state agency responsible for maintaining the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway - two of the busiest toll roads in the United States. The NJTA is dedicated to the safe and efficient movement of people and goods along their toll roads. Every day, the Authority's highways provide the safest, quickest, and most convenient routes for hundreds of commuters, truckers, and recreational travelers.
OUR MISSION:
We are committed to constantly improving the safety, technology, and resiliency of our toll roadway systems through sound fiscal policy and maintaining an excellent state of good repair that promotes the connectedness of our customers across the state and region.
POSITION:
The New Jersey Turnpike Authority is accepting applications for current and future openings as an Automotive Technician on the New Jersey Turnpike highway.
Technicians work under the supervision of an Automotive Supervisor. Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electronic, and electrical systems of automobiles, trucks, light to heavy agricultural, highway and construction equipment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Utilize a variety of shop tools and equipment including scan tools and diagnostic equipment to perform difficult to complex repair tasks on vehicle and equipment.

  1. Performs highly specialized diagnostic and repair work related to computerized ignition and fuel injection systems, body control, transmissions, differentials, steering components, and engines; test drives vehicles and equipment to ensure proper operation and performance.

  1. Overhauls and rebuilds mechanical components and systems such as diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulic, electrical, cooling, brake and suspension systems.

  1. Inspects and performs preventive maintenance on a variety of cars, trucks, and specialized equipment such as agricultural equipment, construction equipment, and other related types of equipment.

  1. Mentor apprentice candidates in pursuit of automotive technician journeyman.

  1. Completes and maintains records of servicing operations such as work orders and labor time entries by means of a personal computer; and vehicle bi-directional interface software.

  1. Performs federal inspections, maintains a safe, clean, organized work area.

  1. Performs all related work utilizing maintenance person in an emergency situation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Educational requirements include a four (4) year standard high school diploma or GED, a graduate of formal accredited automotive vocational training in the areas of Automobile Technician or Medium/Heavy Truck Technician.
2. Alternatively, the satisfactory completion of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority apprenticeship program satisfies the above stated educational requirements.
3. ASE certification in Automobile Technician or Medium/Heavy Truck Technician and/or Accredited Original Equipment Manufacturer's Automotive or Truck Technician Training required.
4. Accredited original equipment manufacturer (OEM) new model certification shall be achieved, on a regular ongoing basis as scheduled by management, during the entire term of employment.
5. A minimum of four (4) years of journey-level experience in performing skilled automotive or medium/heavy truck work involving inspection, troubleshooting, diagnosis, modification, maintenance, rebuilding and repair.
6. A valid NJ Commercial Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
7. Requires a pre-employment medical evaluation and substance abuse testing, and is subject to post-employment random alcohol and controlled substance testing.
8. Required to furnish and maintain a complete set of hand tools that include but are not limited to; punches, hammers, pliers, screwdrivers, torx, hex and files. A variety of wrenches and sockets in standard up-to 1" and the metric equivalent of up-to 23mm.
9. Ability to use logic and reasoning to understand, analyze, and evaluate situations and exercise good judgment to make appropriate decisions.
10. Ability to listen and understand information and ideas being presented verbally and in writing.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of an automotive technician, the employee is frequently required to walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand; sit; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; or crawl; and talk; or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 70 pounds, also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
BENEFITS & PAY :
Starting pay will be the minimum salary stated in this posting. Determination of work location or shift shall be made following offer of employment. Positions may be located at one of the New Jersey Turnpike highway maintenance yards in Swedesboro, Moorestown, Mount Laurel, Crosswicks, Hightstown, Milltown, Elizabeth, Newark, Secaucus, Jersey City, and East Rutherford. This position is ineligible for flex time and/or telework. Toll-free commutation is available for employee travel to and from work on the NJ Turnpike and Garden State Parkway.
This position is represented by IFPTE Local 194. All Local 194 NJTA full time employees are entitled to participate in the following benefits per the guidelines of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA): Medical, dental, vision, and prescription insurance after applicable waiting period; Enrollment in the NJ Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) if eligible; PERS Life insurance and PERS Supplemental Life Insurance; Group Life Insurance; Worker's Compensation Insurance; 457(b) Deferred Compensation plan; Time off including holidays, vacation days, sick days, personal days, leaves of absence, and other pre-approved days after applicable waiting periods.
