Automotive Software Engineer Remote information

What does an automotive software engineer do when working remotely?

An Automotive Software Engineer working remotely designs, develops, tests, and maintains software systems used in vehicles, such as infotainment systems, ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems), and vehicle control units. They typically collaborate virtually with other engineers and stakeholders to ensure software quality and compliance with automotive standards. Remote engineers use tools for code versioning, debugging, and testing, and may need to simulate vehicle environments on their local machines or connect to remote testing hardware. Effective communication and self-management are crucial for success in this remote role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automotive software engineer remote?

To thrive as an Automotive Software Engineer (Remote), you need a solid background in computer science, embedded systems, and automotive protocols, typically backed by a relevant degree and experience in automotive software development. Familiarity with programming languages like C/C++, AUTOSAR, CAN, and tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, as well as knowledge of software development life cycles and industry standards (e.g., ISO 26262), is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for remote teamwork and complex project delivery. These skills ensure the delivery of reliable, safe, and innovative automotive software solutions in a distributed work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote automotive software engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Automotive Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as collaborating across different time zones, maintaining clear communication with hardware teams, and ensuring secure access to proprietary vehicle systems. To address these, companies typically use robust project management tools, schedule regular video meetings, and implement secure remote development environments. Building strong documentation habits and proactive communication also help ensure alignment with cross-functional teams, making remote work both productive and rewarding.

Job description

Manufacturing Engineer - GD&T & Powertrain Analysis

We're seeking an experienced Manufacturing Engineer who thrives on project-based work and is ready to take on a new assignment. Supporting a leading global automotive manufacturer in the Detroit metro area, you will contribute to an important manufacturing quality initiative focused on evaluating inspection coverage, feature verification, and process controls throughout the powertrain machining process.

In this role, you will analyze engineering drawings, quality documentation, and machining process requirements to identify how critical product features are measured and verified during production. Success in this position requires strong GD&T knowledge, blueprint interpretation skills, and a solid understanding of machining processes, cutting tools, and manufacturing principles.

  • This is a long-term consulting engagement with a minimum expected commitment of 650 hours and the potential for future project assignments.
  • The position is approximately 75% remote, with periodic onsite visits required at the customer's facility.
  • We are unable to consider candidates who require sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Key Responsibilities
  • Analyze powertrain component prints, identifying and organizing all features and dimensions produced throughout the machining process.
  • Create and maintain detailed feature lists using a provided Excel template.
  • Review Quality Control Plans to determine which print features are being inspected, document the gaging or measurement method, and record inspection frequencies.
  • Review cutting tool preset machine programs and Tool Control documentation to identify additional cutting tool features being verified during the manufacturing process.
  • Identify and document part print features that are not currently being inspected through either the Control Plan or Tool Control documentation.
  • Provide a comprehensive list of features and corresponding inspection methods, or identify where no inspection method exists, for plant review.
  • Utilize CAD software to review and analyze engineering drawings.
  • Prioritize tasks effectively and determine the appropriate sequence of activities required to complete project assignments.
  • Communicate regularly with team members and management, providing updates on project status, findings, challenges, and potential concerns.
  • Analyze engineering prints, manufacturing processes, and work orders to identify discrepancies that could result in production or quality issues.
  • Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, process engineering, quality engineering, machining, or a related technical discipline.
  • Strong working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and analyzing engineering drawings and blueprints.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, machining methods, cutting tools, and production environments.
  • Experience using CAD software for drawing review and analysis.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage priorities with limited supervision.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting powertrain, engine component, or automotive manufacturing operations.
  • Knowledge of CNC machining processes.
  • Familiarity with Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software.
  • AutoCAD experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field.

Why Consider This Opportunity?
This assignment offers the opportunity to support a major automotive manufacturing initiative, working directly with engineering drawings, quality control documentation, and powertrain machining processes. You'll apply your expertise in GD&T, blueprint interpretation, manufacturing processes, and inspection methodology while contributing to a high-impact project for a leading global automotive manufacturer.

If you are a detail-oriented engineer who enjoys analyzing prints, evaluating manufacturing requirements, and identifying gaps in inspection and process controls, we encourage you to apply.
