A Day in the Life:

The Data Center Server Specialist is a recognized subject matter expert responsible for the advanced engineering, implementation, and highest-level support of the organization's enterprise-wide server infrastructure within its data centers. This role requires an unparalleled understanding of complex server technologies, their interdependencies, and their strategic alignment with business objectives. The Specialist will lead critical infrastructure projects, define technical standards, troubleshoot the most challenging incidents, drive automation initiatives, and provide expert guidance to other technical teams and leadership. This position is crucial for ensuring the scalability, resilience, performance, and security of core IT services.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Lead the design and evolution of secure, scalable, and highly available server solutions aligned to business needs.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend strategic adoption.

  • Develop infrastructure roadmaps, standards, and governance practices.

  • Act as the escalation point for complex server OS and enterprise issues.

  • Perform advanced configuration, optimization, and performance tuning.

  • Lead major upgrades, migrations, and consolidation initiatives.

  • Drive automation for provisioning, configuration, and routine operations.

  • Analyze performance trends, forecast capacity needs, and resolve bottlenecks.

  • Design and maintain high-availability and disaster recovery solutions; lead testing.

  • Implement and enforce security controls, compliance standards, and remediation activities.

  • Lead large-scale infrastructure projects, managing scope, timelines, and outcomes.

  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to team members.

  • Develop and maintain high-quality technical documentation.

  • Collaborate with internal teams, vendors, and partners as a technical liaison.

  • Stay current on industry trends and conduct proof-of-concept evaluations.

Knowledge and Technical Competencies:

  • Operating Systems: Deep expertise in Windows Server (AD, DNS, GPO, PowerShell).

  • Virtualization & Containerization: Expert knowledge of VMware vSphere (ESXi, vCenter, SRM, vSAN) and/or Microsoft Hyper-V. Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or other container platforms.

  • Automation & Scripting: High proficiency with PowerShell, Python, Bash, and infrastructure-as-code practices.

  • Networking: Strong understanding of data center networking (TCP/IP, VLANs, firewalls, load balancing, Fibre Channel zoning).

  • Cloud Integration: Experience with Azure, AWS, or GCP and hybrid cloud strategies.

  • Monitoring & Logging: Expertise with tools such as Splunk, ELK, Prometheus, Grafana, or SolarWinds.

Skills/Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.

  • Typically 10+ years of progressive IT infrastructure experience, including 7-8+ years in senior server roles within large-scale data centers.

  • VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP) or VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX) (desired).

  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert or equivalent (desired).

  • ITIL Expert or higher (desired).

  • Relevant security certifications (e.g., CISSP, CCSP) (desired).
