Job description

The position reports to Automation Engineer and is responsible for technical support for laboratory automation platforms, including troubleshooting and equipment recovery at the Piscataway site of the GenScript Gene R&D department.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide daily technical support for laboratory automation platforms, including troubleshooting, problem diagnosis, repair, and equipment recovery.
  2. Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, sensor, robotic, communication, and basic software-related issues.
  3. Support automation platforms such as Tecan, Hamilton, and other laboratory automation equipment.
  4. Perform routine preventive and corrective maintenance to improve equipment reliability and minimize downtime.
  5. Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring or significant equipment failures and implement corrective actions.
  6. Track recurring equipment issues and identify opportunities for reliability and performance improvement.
  7. Maintain equipment service history, maintenance records, troubleshooting records, and error information.
  8. Build and maintain an Automation Knowledge Base, including common issues, troubleshooting procedures, root causes, corrective actions, recovery procedures, and Lessons Learned.
  9. Develop and update SOPs, work instructions, troubleshooting guides, and maintenance procedures to support long-term knowledge transfer.
  10. Support equipment installation, commissioning, upgrades, modifications, and small automation improvement projects.
  11. Work closely with laboratory users to resolve equipment issues and improve daily automation platform operation.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a closely related engineering field.
  2. 1+ year of relevant engineering experience in equipment support, automation, maintenance, manufacturing, or a related technical environment.
  3. Hands-on experience troubleshooting mechanical and/or electrical equipment.
  4. Experience reading technical manuals, mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  5. Ability to perform systematic troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
  6. Strong technical documentation and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with laboratory automation systems or automated life-science equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with Tecan and/or Hamilton automation platforms.
  • Experience with liquid handlers, robotic arms, plate handlers, stackers, barcode scanners, sensors, motors, pneumatics, or similar automation components.
  • Experience supporting equipment preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance.
  • Experience creating troubleshooting guides, maintenance procedures, SOPs, or technical knowledge bases.
  • Basic understanding of equipment communication, networking, TCP/IP, serial communication, or automation software is a plus.
  • Basic programming or scripting experience is a plus.
  • Experience in a biotechnology, pharmaceutical, laboratory, or regulated manufacturing environment is a plus.
