Job Title: Controls Engineer

Job Description

This role focuses on designing, programming, and troubleshooting industrial control systems for a wide range of automation projects. You will work both independently and collaboratively to deliver reliable, high‑quality solutions, leveraging your expertise in PLC/HMI programming, electrical design, and industrial networking. You will support customers directly, manage standard projects with minimal oversight, and contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design and troubleshoot electrical power and control circuits, as well as complete control panels, using AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Program and troubleshoot PLCs and HMIs on platforms such as Allen‑Bradley, Rockwell Logix, Studio 5000, Siemens PLCs, and other common industrial automation systems.
  • Configure, program, and troubleshoot SCADA systems and related industrial control software.
  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot industrial networks, including Ethernet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, and similar communication systems.
  • Apply NEC codes, UL 508A standards, and general electrical design principles with minimal technical assistance to ensure compliant and safe designs.
  • Independently engineer and execute standard automation projects, from concept through commissioning, while supporting typical service calls as needed.
  • Plan and manage tasks to meet established project budgets and timelines, escalating risks or issues when necessary.
  • Prepare and complete all required engineering documentation in accordance with company policies, procedures, and quality standards.
  • Collaborate closely with internal teams, vendors, and customers to ensure project success and high levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Follow all safety, health, and environmental policies and promote a safe working environment on-site and in the office.
  • Adhere to quality control procedures and engineering standards throughout project execution to ensure reliable system performance.
  • Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, vendors, and external customers, providing clear technical explanations and updates.
  • Provide on‑site support to diagnose issues, implement solutions, and verify that system performance meets customer expectations.
  • Offer technical guidance and support to junior engineers when appropriate, sharing best practices and lessons learned.
  • Contribute ideas to improve engineering processes, workflows, tools, and standards to enhance overall efficiency and quality.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • With a bachelor’s degree, at least 2+ years of relevant experience in controls engineering or industrial automation; without a bachelor’s degree, at least 6+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of PLC programming and troubleshooting, including Allen‑Bradley PLCs, Rockwell Logix, Studio 5000, and Siemens PLCs.
  • Hands‑on experience with HMI programming and troubleshooting in industrial environments.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical for electrical design, panel layout, and documentation.
  • Solid understanding of industrial control systems, including control system design, implementation, and commissioning.
  • Experience with industrial networking, including Ethernet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, and similar communication protocols.
  • Ability to interpret and apply NEC codes, UL 508A standards, and general electrical design principles.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications for documentation, reporting, and communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, and related hardware.
  • Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills with a focus on practical, field‑ready solutions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for interaction with customers, vendors, and internal teams.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to move throughout production and office environments, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing stairs, and lifting up to 50 lbs during system evaluations or troubleshooting.
  • Ability to travel to customer sites within approximately an hour’s range, including working in environments with noise, heat, or uneven terrain.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with SCADA systems, including configuration, programming, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience in electrical engineering or electrical design, including power and control circuits and control panel design.
  • Experience with controls engineering and industrial automation projects from design through commissioning.
  • Familiarity with Rockwell and Allen‑Bradley platforms, including Logix and Studio 5000 environments.
  • Experience with Autocad and AutoCAD Electrical for detailed control system design and documentation.
  • Exposure to system design for industrial automation, including architecture, component selection, and integration.
  • Experience with troubleshooting and programming in diverse control environments and platforms.
  • Ability to support and mentor junior engineers by providing technical guidance and best practices.
  • Interest in contributing to continuous improvement of processes, workflows, and engineering standards.

Work Environment

The role follows a Monday through Thursday schedule from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., providing a 4/10 workweek with three days off. You will work in both office and production environments, moving between engineering workstations, shop floors, and customer sites as needed. The culture emphasizes collaboration and support, where team members actively help one another to achieve project success. Travel to customer locations within roughly an hour’s range is required, including work in environments that may involve elevated noise levels, heat, or uneven terrain. The position involves regular physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing stairs, and occasionally lifting up to 50 lbs during system evaluations or troubleshooting. Standard professional attire and appropriate safety gear are expected in production and field environments.E

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fresno, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $46.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
