What is an automation engineer?

Automation Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and implement automated systems and processes to improve efficiency, quality, and productivity in various industries. They work with technologies such as robotics, control systems, and software to automate repetitive or complex tasks. Their responsibilities often include programming, troubleshooting, and maintaining automation equipment, as well as collaborating with other engineers to optimize workflows. Automation Engineers are employed in sectors like manufacturing, IT, automotive, and pharmaceuticals.

What does an automation engineer do?

As an automation engineer, your job is to design and develop automated machines for your company. Your responsibilities may include determining the best way to implement automation, creating devices that meet the company's needs and specifications, testing robots to ensure they perform as designed, and monitoring existing automation to check if repair or replacement is needed. Many duties of this job vary by industry. For example, automation engineers work in areas like the automotive industry, food preparation and packaging, electronics production, and appliance production, and each of these fields has different materials and objectives. However, regardless of industry, most automation engineers work with both hardware and software.

What are some common challenges automation engineers face when integrating new systems into existing workflows?

Automation Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new automation solutions with legacy systems, including compatibility issues and data migration complexities. Coordinating with cross-functional teams—such as IT, operations, and production—can require extensive communication to ensure seamless implementation. Additionally, balancing the need for system reliability with innovation and minimizing downtime during transitions are key concerns. Proactively addressing these challenges through thorough planning and testing helps ensure successful integration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automation Engineer, you need a strong grasp of control systems, programming (such as PLC, Python, or C++), and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with automation platforms like Rockwell, Siemens, or SCADA systems, as well as certifications like ISA or relevant vendor-specific credentials, is highly valued. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with diverse teams and troubleshooting complex issues. These skills and qualifications are critical for designing efficient automated solutions, minimizing downtime, and ensuring seamless integration of systems.

Job description

Job Title: Software & Automation Engineer

We are seeking a mid-level Software & Automation Engineer to join our small technology team and work hands-on across our in-house ERP, data pipelines, automation, and AI tooling. This is an individual-contributor role, not a management role: you will own work end to end alongside our existing engineer and split a broad, real-world workload in a bilingual (Korean-English) corporate environment. Full-stack engineering is the core of the job; because our team is small, you should be comfortable wearing multiple hats and using AI to multiply what you deliver.

Who Thrives in This Role:
You enjoy variety and autonomy over deep specialization. In a given week, you might build a full-stack feature, automate a business workflow, wire up an AI agent, fix an ERP data issue, help a colleague get unblocked on their laptop, and talk directly to the people who use what you build. You see leveraging AI to multiply your own output as the fun part, not a distraction. When something breaks or stalls, you stay with it until it is closed - and you surface where it stands before anyone has to ask. This role is probably not for you if you want to focus on a single stack or a narrow specialty with a large team and well-defined tickets handed to you.

Responsibility Areas:

  • Design, build, and maintain services and APIs for our in-house ERP and internal systems (TypeScript/Node.js and Python backend, React front-end).
  • Build and improve data pipelines and reporting (BigQuery, Dataform, Data Studio) that business teams rely on for decisions.
  • Investigate and resolve production issues across the ERP, databases, and integrations; improve reliability, performance, and data integrity.
  • Build internal automation and tools (including Google Apps Script) to streamline Sales, SCM, Accounting, and Operations workflows.
  • Build AI-enabled automation, including AI agents and coding-assistant harnesses, and contribute to the company's broader AI initiatives.
  • Work directly with business users to turn requirements into working software, communicating in both Korean and English.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 4 to 5 years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Solid backend skills (TypeScript/Node.js and Python, or a comparable stack), including API design and data modeling.
  • Comfortable across the full stack, including modern front-end (React/TypeScript; Next.js a plus).
  • Solid SQL and relational database experience (MySQL, PostgreSQL).
  • Hands-on experience using AI coding assistants in daily development (e.g., Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor), and genuine interest in building AI agents and automation.
  • Ability to work independently, own work end to end, and take on a broad range of technical tasks (backend, automation, AI tooling, data, and support) in a small team.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with non-technical audiences - translating an unclear business ask into a defined scope, explaining technical trade-offs without jargon, and keeping people informed through delivery.
  • Cloud experience (GCP preferred; AWS/Azure acceptable).
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Korean (verbal and written) - you will move between both languages in the same day, and can carry the same technical explanation into either one without losing precision.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Comfort extending systems you did not build, not only greenfield projects.
  • Experience with ERP or other core business systems, including modernization or migration work.
  • Familiarity with modern data stacks (BigQuery, Dataform, Data Studio).
  • Experience with Google Apps Script or workflow automation.
  • Industry experience in steel, manufacturing, distribution, logistics, or supply chain.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., GCP/AWS).

Work Hours: Full-Time (Monday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM)

Benefits:At USP, we believe great work deserves great support. Our benefits are designed to promote your health, growth, and well-being:

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid vacation, sick leave, and company holidays
  • Performance-based bonus opportunities
  • Employee recognition and years-of-service awards
  • Education and professional development reimbursement
  • Daily meal allowance
  • Company-sponsored team lunches and dinners
  • Fitness membership reimbursement
  • Company-sponsored team-building and recreational activities
  • Employee birthday gifts
