The Fred Hutch Operating Engineer is a building maintenance technician responsible for independently performing tasks of a skilled nature necessary for the operation, maintenance, and repair of Fred Hutch buildings, grounds, and equipment. The Fred Hutch OE is a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 302. Fred Hutch members of IUOE Local 302 benefit from very competitive wages, a pension, and a great medical and dental package.

The OE Apprenticeship is an โ€œEarn While You Learnโ€ program designed to pay participants while being trained as an Operating Engineer. The OE Apprentice learns the skills through hands-on experience while attending classroom courses paid and provided by the IUOE Local 302. The OE Apprentice will gain skills in electrical, mechanical, refrigeration, boiler, and building automation trades. The OE Apprentice program is a four-year program during which they will acquire various certifications and licenses while being an active member of the IUOE Local 302.


The OE Apprentice will be rotated through all departmental disciplines and perform work orders as assigned and be expected to complete them under supervision or independently depending on complexity of the work. These responsibilities include coordinating with customers and executing the work.

  • Attend classes at Rental Technical College as required and maintain passing grades.
  • Maintain an on-the-job training record and turn these records into the union monthly and on time.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and equipment relevant to selected trade.
  • Perform manual labor associated with the relevant trade.
  • Runs errands, carries and delivers materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Cleans tools and equipment.
  • Does skilled trade work commensurate with years of experience as an apprentice.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driverโ€™s License.
  • Physical skills necessary to climb, bend, stoop, lift and perform tasks utilizing ladders and scaffolds, etc.

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Dependable, on-time, and proven good work habits.
  • Great communication skills
  • Able to work a varied schedule including shift work.
  • Must have some knowledge of basic mechanics and use of hand tools.

This position is represented by IUOE-302. The hourly contracted range for this position is $28.17 to $39.98, which is inclusive of a $1.50-$7.00 Central Pension Fund diversion.

Position is eligible for shift differentials, premiums for licenses, and other wage premiums as governed by the collective bargaining agreement.
Although Fred Hutch is not sponsoring most H-1B visas at this time, candidates who already hold an H-1B sponsored by another organization and are currently in the U.S. may be eligible for this position.
