Job Description

The Automation Supervisor leads, manages, and holds accountable the Automation and Electrical Design team, overseeing all day-to-day operations. This role maintains the systems used to produce electrical drawings and automation code for internal manufacturing teams and external customers. The Automation Supervisor ensures the integrity of embedded metadata within drawing structures to support accurate procurement and serves as a key liaison between Service and Engineering to drive cohesive, high-quality automation solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Automation and Electrical Design team, providing clear direction, coaching, and accountability.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the automation and electrical design function to ensure projects meet quality, schedule, and cost targets.
  • Maintain and administer systems used to produce electrical drawings and automation code for manufacturing teams and end customers.
  • Ensure data integrity and accuracy of embedded metadata within drawing structures to support reliable procurement and documentation.
  • Develop, review, and optimize PLC programs and automation logic to support new and existing equipment and processes.
  • Collaborate closely with Service and Engineering teams to ensure effective communication, issue resolution, and alignment on technical requirements.
  • Troubleshoot automation and control system issues, providing guidance to the team and supporting root cause analysis.
  • Drive process improvement initiatives within the automation and electrical design area, leveraging methodologies such as Six Sigma where appropriate.
  • Support product development activities by contributing automation and controls expertise to new designs and enhancements.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, including planning, prioritizing, and monitoring progress to ensure successful completion.
  • Establish and maintain standards, best practices, and documentation for controls engineering, PLC programming, and automation systems.
  • Ensure compliance with internal procedures and applicable industry standards for automation and electrical design.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  • At least 7 years of controls programming experience.
  • Proven supervisor or leadership experience managing technical teams.
  • Strong PLC programming experience, including development, modification, and troubleshooting.
  • Hands-on experience in controls engineering and automation systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot automation and control system issues.
  • Project management skills, including planning, prioritization, and coordination of multiple initiatives.
  • Experience with process improvement initiatives in an automation or manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including Service and Engineering.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining data integrity in drawings and documentation.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Rockwell / Allen-Bradley PLCs and related automation platforms.
  • Background in product development involving automation and controls.
  • Familiarity with Six Sigma or similar continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience creating and maintaining electrical drawings and embedded metadata for procurement.
  • Ability to develop and enforce standards and best practices for automation and electrical design.
  • Strong communication skills to serve as a key liaison between technical and service-oriented teams.

Work Environment

The role operates in a professional engineering and manufacturing environment focused on automation and electrical design. You will work closely with manufacturing, service, and engineering teams, using modern PLC programming tools, controls engineering software, and systems for producing electrical drawings and automation code. The position supports both internal production needs and external customer requirements, with a mix of office-based design work and potential interaction with shop-floor or equipment environments.
