Job description

About the Role:

The Precision Parts Lapping Technician plays a critical role in the manufacturing process by ensuring that components meet exacting surface finish and dimensional specifications. This position involves the meticulous preparation, lapping, and finishing of aerospace parts to achieve optimal flatness, smoothness, and tolerance levels. The technician will work closely with quality control and engineering teams to interpret technical drawings and apply precise lapping techniques that enhance product performance and longevity. Attention to detail and consistency are paramount, as the quality of the lapped parts directly impacts the reliability and functionality of the final product. Ultimately, this role contributes to maintaining high manufacturing standards and customer satisfaction through superior component finishing.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience in precision machining, grinding, or lapping in a manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with reading and interpreting technical drawings, specifications and blueprints.
  • Proficiency in using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, and surface roughness testers.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain high attention to detail.
  • All candidates are subject to a pre-employment drug test.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Formal training in precision machining or surface finishing techniques.
  • Experience working in aerospace manufacturing or a similar industrial setting.
  • Knowledge of lapping compounds and abrasives and their appropriate applications.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills related to lapping equipment.
  • Understanding of quality management systems such as ISO 9001.

Responsibilities:

  • Set up and operate lapping machines such as Lapmaster and P.R. Hoffman lapping equipment and related equipment to finish parts according to specifications.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and quality standards to determine lapping requirements for each part.
  • Perform manual and automated lapping processes to achieve required surface finishes and dimensional tolerances.
  • Inspect parts during and after lapping using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, dial indicators, and surface roughness testers.
  • Maintain equipment cleanliness and perform routine maintenance to ensure optimal machine performance.
  • Document process parameters, inspection results, and any deviations to support quality assurance.
  • Collaborate with engineering and/or quality teams to troubleshoot and improve lapping processes.

Skills:

The required skills enable the technician to accurately interpret engineering drawings and apply precise lapping techniques to meet stringent quality standards. Proficiency with precision measuring instruments ensures that parts are consistently inspected and verified for compliance with specifications. Attention to detail and manual dexterity are essential for performing delicate finishing operations and maintaining equipment. Preferred skills such as knowledge of abrasives and mechanical troubleshooting enhance the technician's ability to optimize processes and reduce downtime. Effective communication and collaboration skills support coordination with engineering and quality teams to continuously improve product quality and manufacturing efficiency.
