Position Overview
Zero Carbon Systems seeks a Mechanical Designer to support engineering development for our Direct Air Capture (DAC) systems. This is an on-site role focused on mechanical design, CAD modeling, drawing creation, and cross-functional collaboration across our engineering, manufacturing, and materials teams. This full-time position is based in Brighton, CO (Onsite) and reports to the Director of Mechanical Engineering.
Responsibilities Include:
  • Create and maintain designs, layouts, drawings, and documentation using Autodesk Inventor and other relevant software.
  • Develop assembly drawings, BOMs, and detail drawings per company and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to evaluate designs based on function, materials, manufacturing methods, production cost, and customer specifications.
  • Utilize Autodesk Inventor to prepare plans, layouts, and component designs while editing drawing revisions.
  • Resolve clashes and discrepancies in the 3D model and check for discrepancies between deliverables.
  • Produce and update detailed drawings incorporating dimensioned sections, details, finished surface callouts, Bill of Materials, assembly instructions, and work instructions.
  • Manage versioning, storage, and updates of approved drawings using CAD Database EPDM vault.
  • Troubleshoot design and manufacturing issues, applying knowledge of ANSI Standards and GD&T principles.
  • Process Engineering Change Notices (ECN) and collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Purchasing to assess change impacts.
  • Prepare drafts for production, purchasing, or management approval as needed.
  • Integrate safety considerations into all mechanical designs, ensuring equipment meets internal and industry safety standards to protect equipment and personnel while minimizing downtime.

Requirements Include:
Minimum Qualifications and Skills
  • Associate's degree in engineering technology or a related field plus 2+ years of practical, hands-on experience in fabrication, machining, and mechanical design of industrial equipment. Or 6+ years of practical hands-on experience encompassing fabrication, machining, and mechanical design of industrial equipment and related fields.
  • Proficiency with 3D modeling tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Catia, Autodesk), preferably with 2+ years in Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD Mechanical, and/or Autodesk Plant3D.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing stainless sheet metal components, machine frames, conveyors, and pressure vessels.
  • Competency in generating detailed technical documentation, including engineering drawings, assembly instructions, and bill of materials (BOMs).
  • Basic understanding of mechanical design principles, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and materials science.
  • Excellent communication skills to convey technical information clearly and effectively to both onsite and offsite engineering teams and stakeholders.
  • Adaptability to changing project requirements and company goals.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Skill in design for manufacturing (DFM), optimizing designs for efficient and cost-effective production.
  • Full understanding of document and drawing revision control.
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft Excel.

Additional Desired Skills
  • Experience creating detailed technical drawings for fabrication and assembly using GD&T principles.
  • Autodesk Certified Professional in Inventor for Mechanical Design is a plus.
  • Experience developing Process Flow and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (PFDs and P&IDs) using SmartPlant3D.
  • Knowledge of welding techniques and considerations for stainless steel and other materials.
  • Strong analytical skills to perform tolerance stack-up analysis and optimization of mechanical designs.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and codes related to equipment design and safety (ASME, ISO, etc.).
  • Ability to collaborate with external suppliers to source components and materials for prototypes and production.
  • Experience in the review of vendor drawings and interface points.
  • Familiarity with rapid prototyping techniques, such as 3D printing and CNC machining.
  • Familiarity with 6-sigma and lean manufacturing principles and the ability to analyze data using statistical tools.
  • Knowledge of electrical and control systems integration within mechanical designs.
  • Experience with risk assessment and mitigation strategies in mechanical design.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively to overcome design challenges.
  • Knowledge of sustainability principles and considerations in mechanical design.
  • Experience in technical presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to conduct FEA simulations and effectively analyze and interpret test data.
  • Experience in startup environments.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Comfortable working in an on-site environment, including time on the shop floor and hands-on design validation.
