What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AutoCAD Electrical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AutoCAD Electrical Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, strong drafting skills, and a relevant engineering degree or diploma. Expertise in AutoCAD Electrical software, familiarity with electrical codes, and experience with PLC programming or schematic design tools are typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and ensure design accuracy. These competencies are vital for delivering precise, efficient, and code-compliant electrical designs in engineering projects.

What is the difference between Autocad Electrical Engineer vs Electrical Draftsman?

AspectAutocad Electrical EngineerElectrical Draftsman
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, certifications in AutoCAD ElectricalDiploma or certification in electrical drafting or AutoCAD
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering firms, construction sitesDrafting departments, engineering firms, manufacturing plants
Industry UsageDesigning electrical systems, project planning, technical documentationCreating detailed electrical drawings, schematics, and layouts

The main difference is that Autocad Electrical Engineers focus on designing and planning electrical systems using AutoCAD Electrical, often requiring an engineering degree. Electrical Draftsmen primarily prepare detailed electrical drawings and schematics, typically with a diploma or certification. Both roles work in similar environments and industries but differ in scope and technical responsibilities.

What does an AutoCAD Electrical Engineer do?

An AutoCAD Electrical Engineer specializes in designing electrical systems using AutoCAD Electrical software. Their primary responsibilities include creating detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and layout drawings for various projects such as buildings, machinery, or industrial equipment. They work closely with other engineers, clients, and project managers to ensure that the electrical designs meet industry standards and project requirements. Additionally, they may be involved in troubleshooting design issues and updating documentation throughout the project lifecycle.

What are some common challenges faced by AutoCAD Electrical Engineers in project coordination?

AutoCAD Electrical Engineers often collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, which can present challenges in aligning electrical designs with mechanical and civil components. Coordinating revisions, managing version control, and ensuring all stakeholders have access to the latest drawings are key hurdles. Effective communication and strong organizational skills are essential to minimize errors and keep projects on schedule. Leveraging project management tools and maintaining clear documentation can greatly assist in overcoming these challenges.

Job description

Description:

We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to support the design, documentation, integration, manufacturing support, and long-term product development of the electrical systems for autonomous aerostat platforms.

This role works closely with a Principal Engineer who owns the overall electrical architecture and system-level integration. The Senior Electrical Engineer will contribute broadly across electrical system design and documentation, including schematic capture, wiring documentation, interface drawings, and controlled design packages in AutoCAD Electrical. Over time, this role will take increasing responsibility for major power- distribution and related subsystem work, including support for higher-voltage DC applications within the platform. This role will also support manufacturing builds, field operations, troubleshooting, and ongoing product improvement based on test and operational feedback.

This is a hands-on role for an engineer who is comfortable moving between system design, detailed electrical documentation, integration, implementation support, manufacturing issue resolution, and field troubleshooting. The ideal candidate brings practical experience in electrical power systems, DC power distribution, power electronics, industrial electrical design, mobile electrical systems, or similar applied electrical hardware development, along with strong documentation discipline and product support capability.

Although we list out what we generally look for, we are very likely missing other attributes and skills that you have that could make you a great fit, and are not currently listed. Research has shown this especially applies to women and other marginalized groups, who tend to apply if they check 100% of every box, versus men who apply if they hit roughly 60%. The point we’re getting at, it doesn’t hurt to take a chance and apply!

We are an inclusive employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

This is a hybrid position. Must be able to commute to Fremont, NH at least 1x week.

Requirements:

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the design and ongoing development of the electrical systems for autonomous aerostat platforms
  • Work closely with the Principal Engineer to implement system architecture into detailed electrical designs and controlled documentation
  • Lead detailed electrical design and day-to-day coordination with mechanical engineering to translate electrical requirements, component selections, wiring needs, and layout constraints into a buildable, maintainable, and robust cabinet design.
  • Support development of electrical power-distribution subsystems and related interfaces
  • Define and document interfaces between power hardware, controls, sensors, payload systems, and supporting equipment
  • Work with controls and software engineers on interlocks, telemetry, status signals, and safe-state behavior
  • Support lab bring-up, integration, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis
  • Support manufacturing builds and field operations with, issue resolutions, design clarification, corrective actions and electrical documentation updates based on feedback
  • Help improve manufacturability, maintainability, serviceability, and reliability over time
  • Contribute to design reviews, verification planning, and ongoing design improvement as the platform matures
  • Support long-term subsystem ownership and documentation maintenance throughout the product lifecycle

Create, update, and maintain:

  • electrical schematics
  • wiring diagrams
  • interconnect documentation
  • panel/interface drawings
  • cable and harness documentation
  • drawing revisions and released design packages in AutoCAD Electrical

Assist with design implementation for:

  • Power distribution
  • protection and fault isolation
  • pre-charge and discharge circuits
  • contactor and relay strategy
  • sensing and monitoring
  • subsystem electrical interfaces

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • 5+ years of relevant electrical engineering experience
  • Experience in multiple of the following: Electrical power systems, DC power distribution, AC power distribution, power electronics, industrial electrical design, mobile electrical systems, similar applied electrical hardware development
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical
  • Experience creating and maintaining electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and controlled design documentation
  • Strong working knowledge of protection concepts including combinations of: Fuses/breakers/disconnects, relays/contactors, current/voltage sensing, pre-charge/discharge, fault response
  • Strong troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and corrective-action skills
  • Ability to work effectively with system, controls, mechanical, manufacturing, test, and operations personnel

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with 1-5 kV DC power-distribution design considerations
  • Experience with systems in the 2 kW to 20 kW range
  • Experience supporting electrical hardware through concept, detailed design, integration, test, troubleshooting , and design revision.
  • Experience supporting electrical hardware in manufacturing, production support, sustaining engineering, field troubleshooting, or similar product- support environments.
  • Experience with long-cable, tethered, or remote power-delivery systems
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, UAV, marine, industrial mobile, energy, or other harsh-environment systems
  • Experience with grounding/bonding, connector and termination design, and fielded electrical hardware
  • Experience with EMI/EMC mitigation in switched power systems
  • Experience supporting abnormal-condition testing, subsystem integration, and field troubleshooting

Role Fit

This role is best suited for a hands-on Senior Electrical Engineer who can contribute broadly across electrical system design and documentation while also supporting the realities of build, test, manufacturing, and fielded operation. The successful candidate will not be expected to own the full aerostat electrical architecture. That responsibility remains with the Principal Engineer. This role is

intended for a strong implementation-focused engineer who can help turn system architecture into practical, buildable, supportable electrical hardware and then help improve that hardware over time through manufacturing and field feedback.
