Job Description

Position Title: Collision and Overall Painer Technician

Supervisor: Title: Owner

Position Description

The collision refinish technician performs high-quality refinishing to collision damaged components and assemblies.

Essential Duties

The essential duties of this position are:

  • Mixes appropriate amount of liquid materials to minimize waste
  • Tints colors to obtain accurate color match to the vehicle’s existing finish.
  • Apply primer, sealer, color, and clearcoat to vehicle components and assemblies.
  • Keep work area clean and organized.
  • Keep shop equipment clean and in good working condition.
  • Assist other technicians as needed for prepping vehicles for paint.
  • Follow and comply with all standard operating procedures and hazardous waste disposal.
  • Assist in developing or refining standard operating procedures as required.
  • Follow and comply with all required health and safety requirements.
  • Complies with and follows all scheduled work hours and attendance policies.
  • Complies with the business code of conduct and other policies
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Reads work orders to confirm that the work performed matches the work order.
  • Paint five or more complete work orders per weekday shift and 2 or more work orders per Saturday shift.
  • Conducts quality control on every vehicle to make sure that repairs are completed correctly, and the vehicle is properly prepped prior to painting. Shoots a spray-out card for each vehicle to confirm color and gets it signed-off by management.
  • Attend shop meetings.
  • Verify that all parts that are required for the vehicle are painted in one paint booth cycle. This includes new and parts that may have been removed from the vehicle for repair that will not be installed until after they are painted
  • Ensures that all materials are ordered and properly stocked prior to us running out.

Knowledge and Skills

The following knowledge and skills are required for this position:

  • Knowledgeable of PPG refinish products and their use and application
  • Skilled in using an automotive refinish mixing system scale and software
  • Skilled in tinting automotive refinish materials to obtain color match
  • Skilled in applying automotive refinish materials
  • Skilled in removing surface defects from applied refinish materials
  • Basic computer data-entry and operation skills for PPG mixing system

Training and Certifications

The following are suggested education and training requirements for this position:

  • Certificate or degree in automotive collision repair and refinishing
  • I-CAR Professional Development Program Level 1 or higher
  • ASE certification B2 – Painting & Refinishing
  • Paint manufacturer training and certification
  • EPA Certification

Work Experience

Three to five years prior work experience required

Supervisory Responsibilities

The working conditions for this position include:

  • Work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
  • Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.
  • May be requested to work overtime and weekends.
  • Noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.
  • May be requested to work overtime and weekends.

Physical Demands

This position has the following physical demands:

  • Oral communication
  • Ability to continuously stand or walk or for extended periods of time
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, squatting
