What is an audition reader?

An Audition Reader is a person who assists in casting sessions by reading lines with actors auditioning for a role. Readers must be skilled at delivering lines naturally while staying in the background of the audition process. This role requires strong reading skills, adaptability, and professionalism.

What does an audition reader do?

During casting season, an Audition Reader spends much of the day reading dialogue opposite actors as they audition for roles, often working closely with directors, casting associates, and other production staff. Responsibilities may include helping to set up the audition room, handling script sides, and giving consistent readings to support each performer’s audition experience. Audition Readers may also assist with organizing scheduling, recording sessions, and providing notes to the casting team. The schedule can vary depending on the number of auditions and productions in progress, requiring flexibility and professionalism throughout the process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an audition reader?

Strong reading comprehension, an understanding of script analysis, and familiarity with acting and casting processes are key qualifications for an Audition Reader.
