What is an Audit RN?

An Audit RN is a Registered Nurse who specializes in reviewing medical records and healthcare documentation to ensure accuracy, compliance, and quality of care. They work with healthcare providers, insurance companies, or auditing firms to verify that billing and coding practices meet regulatory standards. Their role is crucial in preventing fraud, reducing errors, and optimizing reimbursement for healthcare organizations.

An Audit RN works closely with departments such as billing, coding, quality assurance, and clinical teams to review medical records for accuracy and compliance. This collaborative approach helps maintain high standards of patient care and regulatory compliance throughout the organization.

How to become an audit RN?

To become an audit RN, you need to first earn a nursing degree such as an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), then obtain licensure as a registered nurse (RN). Gaining experience in healthcare, understanding auditing processes, and often pursuing certifications like the Certified Healthcare Auditor (CHA) can enhance qualifications for audit roles in healthcare settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Audit RN?

To thrive as an Audit RN, you need a solid background in clinical nursing, knowledge of healthcare regulations, and experience with medical record review, typically supported by an RN license and clinical experience.
