What is an audit engineer?

Audit Engineers are professionals who assess and evaluate systems, processes, or products to ensure they meet regulatory standards, internal policies, and industry best practices. They often conduct technical reviews, risk assessments, and compliance checks, particularly in areas like cybersecurity, software, or manufacturing. Audit Engineers may also recommend improvements, document findings, and work closely with other teams to implement corrective actions. Their role is essential in ensuring organizations maintain quality, safety, and compliance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an audit engineer?

To thrive as an Audit Engineer, you need a solid understanding of auditing principles, risk assessment, and compliance, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field and relevant certifications such as CISA or ISO Lead Auditor. Familiarity with audit management software, data analysis tools, and regulatory frameworks is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help Audit Engineers stand out when identifying issues and collaborating with various stakeholders. These skills ensure accurate audits, regulatory compliance, and the identification of process improvements within technical environments.

How does an audit engineer typically interact with other departments during an audit process?

Audit Engineers regularly collaborate with various departments such as IT, operations, and compliance to gather necessary data and understand current processes. They often conduct interviews and coordinate with team leaders to verify compliance with internal controls and external regulations. Effective communication and relationship-building are crucial, as Audit Engineers must explain technical findings in accessible terms and work with teams to develop practical recommendations for improvements. This cross-functional interaction is essential for conducting thorough audits and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Job description

About Us:
Fieldguide is establishing a new state of trust for global commerce and capital markets through automating and streamlining the work of assurance and audit practitioners specifically within cybersecurity, privacy, and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance). Put simply, we build software for the people who enable trust between businesses.
We're based in San Francisco, CA and backed by top investors including Growth Equity at Goldman Sachs Alternatives, Bessemer Venture Partners, 8VC, Floodgate, Y Combinator, DNX Ventures, Global Founders Capital, Justin Kan, Elad Gil, and more.
We value diversity - in backgrounds and in experiences. We need people from all backgrounds and walks of life to help build the future of audit and advisory. Fieldguide's team is inclusive, driven, humble and supportive. We are deliberate and self-reflective about the kind of team and culture that we are building, seeking teammates that are not only strong in their own aptitudes but care deeply about supporting each other's growth.
As an early stage start-up employee, you'll have the opportunity to build out the future of business trust. We make audit practitioners' lives easier by eliminating up to 50% of their work and giving them better work-life balance. If you share our values and enthusiasm for building a great culture and product, you will find a home at Fieldguide.
About the Role
We're hiring a Staff Software Engineer to join the Financial Audit team at Fieldguide. Financial Audit is one of our most important strategic bets right now, and this is a high-impact role on a team that's building something new. We're not bolting AI onto traditional workflows; we're rethinking financial audit as agentic-first from the ground up. You'll own major workstreams tied to our largest customer onboardings and most ambitious product bets, working alongside engineers, product managers, designers, and financial audit subject matter experts who are all deeply embedded in the problem.
This is a hands-on engineering role where you'll write code every day, and increasingly write code with AI. We're an AI-native team using tools like Claude Code extensively, and we expect this person to push that boundary further.
What You'll Do
  • Set technical direction for agentic financial audit experiences, making architectural decisions that balance autonomy, reliability, and auditability
  • Own the most complex, ambiguous engineering problems on the team and drive them to resolution without needing a well-defined path handed to you
  • Design and build agent-driven workflows from the ground up, defining where AI autonomy is appropriate and where human judgment needs to stay in the loop
  • Partner with product and design to shape what we build, not just how we build it, bringing technical perspective into roadmap and strategy conversations early
  • Mentor and grow the engineers around you through code review, pairing, and the way you approach and communicate hard problems
  • Contribute to our interview process and help us raise the bar as we scale the team

Who You Are
  • A seasoned full-stack engineer with a track record of driving large, complex projects from an ambiguous problem to production
  • Experienced in setting technical direction at the team or org level, not just delivering within it
  • Comfortable operating where the requirements are unclear and the right answer isn't obvious
  • A strong technical collaborator who influences product and design decisions
  • Already using AI coding tools as a core part of how you work, and thoughtful about where agentic approaches create real leverage
  • Able to build deep domain knowledge fast; you don't need to know financial auditing today, but you'll understand it well enough to make the right technical calls within months
  • A multiplier on the engineers around you; your impact extends well beyond your own code

Bonus Points
  • Experience in financial services, audit, accounting, or compliance
  • Prior work building AI or agent-driven product experiences
  • Familiarity with our stack: TypeScript, React, GraphQL, Node.js, PostgreSQL
  • Background working at high-growth startups where you wore a lot of hats
  • Experience with document processing or infrastructure work
