Audit Contractor information

What is an audit contractor?

Audit Contractors are professionals hired on a temporary or contract basis to perform audits and related assurance services for organizations. They typically assess financial records, internal controls, and compliance with laws and regulations. Unlike full-time auditors, audit contractors work independently or through agencies, often supporting companies during peak audit periods or special projects. Their expertise helps organizations ensure accuracy and transparency in their financial reporting.

What are some common challenges an audit contractor faces when working with multiple clients simultaneously?

Audit Contractors often juggle several client engagements at once, which can lead to challenges such as managing overlapping deadlines, adapting to different organizational cultures, and ensuring compliance with varied regulatory standards. Effective time management and communication skills are essential to prioritize tasks and coordinate with client teams. Additionally, quickly gaining familiarity with each client's internal processes is crucial for delivering thorough and accurate audit results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an audit contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Audit Contractor, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of accounting principles, typically supported by a degree in accounting or finance and relevant certifications like CPA or CIA. Familiarity with audit software such as ACL, IDEA, or CaseWare, as well as proficiency in ERP systems, is commonly required. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities help build client trust and effectively manage changing project scopes. These skills are crucial for delivering high-quality audit results, ensuring compliance, and maintaining professional standards in dynamic business environments.

What is the difference between Audit Contractor vs Internal Auditor?

AspectAudit Contractor
Required CredentialsTypically CPA, CIA, or relevant certifications
Work EnvironmentContract-based, often project-specific, working with multiple clients
Employer & Industry UsageHired by firms or organizations for specific audits, common in consulting and external audit firms
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding external vs internal audit roles, contract vs permanent positions

Audit Contractors are hired on a temporary basis to perform specific audit tasks, often for multiple clients, and usually hold relevant certifications like CPA or CIA. Internal Auditors are employed full-time within an organization to continuously monitor and improve internal controls. While both roles require similar credentials, their work environments and employment types differ significantly, with Audit Contractors focusing on external, project-based work and Internal Auditors on ongoing internal processes.

Job description

It's fun to work in a company where people truly BELIEVE in what they're doing!
We're committed to bringing passion and customer focus to the business.

Dare to bring your unique perspective?

At Novogradac, we value individuals who bring unique perspectives and bold ideas. If you're eager to contribute to an inclusive, innovative environment where your personal and professional growth is encouraged and supported, we invite you to explore this exciting opportunity with us.

Position Summary:

The Product Manager, Audit & Tax Systems is accountable for the end-to-end lifecycle and value realization of the company's audit and tax practice systems. This role translates the intent of practice leaders into a clear system vision, roadmap, and delivery plan, ensuring that engagement, workflow, document, and review platforms are well-designed, effectively adopted, and continuously improved. The Product Manager prioritizes investments based on practice value, quality, and compliance, and drives adoption, outcomes, and long-term system health across the audit and tax service lines.

The firm has one available position in either Austin, TX, Bellevue, WA, Long Beach, CA, Portland, OR, Dover, OH, Atlanta, GA, Cleveland, OH, or Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Your Contributions and Responsibilities

Product & System Leadership

  • Act as the product manager for assigned audit and tax platforms (e.g., Caseware, CCH Axcess, engagement and workflow tools, document automation, and e-file/delivery solutions)

  • Develop and maintain system roadmaps, backlogs, and enhancement plans across the audit and tax technology stack

  • Balance competing priorities, dependencies, and constraints across engagement teams, quality control, and firm leadership

  • Plan system lifecycle stages including upgrades, optimization, consolidation, and eventual replacement of legacy or overlapping tools

Business Partnership

  • Partner with audit and tax practice leaders and quality-control owners to clarify intent, outcomes, and success criteria

  • Support practice leaders in making informed tradeoff and investment decisions on software, workflow, and standardization

  • Coordinate cross-functional impacts across engagement management, document delivery, and client-facing processes to ensure practice cohesion

  • Provide functional direction and coordination to process-improvement resources supporting audit and quality-control work, aligning their initiatives to system roadmaps and standards.

  • Partner with Finance on practice value cases and ROI, and with Legal & Risk on security, contracting, compliance, and documentation-retention requirements for audit and tax systems.

Change Management & Adoption

  • Own the adoption strategy for system changes, from rollout through reinforcement, driving proactive, consistent, and standards-aligned adoption across the practice

  • Partner with appropriate cross-functional teams to support training, communication, and standardized use

  • Define and monitor adoption metrics; adjust approach as needed to drive consistent, firm-wide utilization

  • Ensure systems are aligned to how the practice should operate under professional standards, promoting companywide consistency over individual or partner-specific configurations

Delivery & Execution Coordination

  • Work with project managers to execute initiatives aligned to the product roadmap

  • Partner with IT on technical feasibility, security, architecture, and integrations (e.g., data flow between engagement, workflow, and delivery systems)

  • Coordinate vendor engagement-including demos, evaluations, and contract terms-from a business and product perspective

Value & Optimization

  • Measure system utilization, effectiveness, and realized practice value across the audit and tax service lines

  • Identify opportunities to reduce manual work, eliminate redundant point solutions, and improve review and delivery efficiency

  • Recommend system rationalization, consolidation, or retirement where the practice has accumulated overlapping or partner-specific tools

Your Background and Skills

  • Strong understanding of audit and/or tax engagement workflows, quality-control processes, and professional standards

  • Ability to work independently and to lead without authority and navigate complex stakeholder environments across partners, managers, and staff

  • Experience translating practice needs into scalable system designs and standardized workflows

  • Ability to operate at both strategic and operational levels

  • Familiarity with a broad range of audit and tax technologies, integrations, and system architectures

  • Knowledge of business process modeling and improvement techniques

  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently in areas of uncertainty, using analytical skills to clarify ambiguities and resolve complex practice challenges

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Accounting Information Systems, Information Systems Management, Finance, Computer Science, or a related field, plus at least 5 years of experience in an audit or tax practice and/or product management, business analysis, systems enablement, or application ownership.

Preferred Qualifications

Hands-on experience with audit and/or tax platforms (e.g., Caseware, CCH Axcess, ProSystem fx, and engagement/document automation). Prior experience in public accounting or supporting an audit or tax practice. CPA license or CPA candidacy, or equivalent experience supporting engagement and quality-control processes. Experience working with project management platforms (e.g., Jira, Wrike) and information security audit frameworks (e.g., SOC 2, ISO 27001). Certification in Business Analysis (e.g., CBAP, CCBA).
