Job description

Staff Software Applications Engineer – Automotive Embedded Systems

Location: Markham, ON
Focus: Embedded Software, Automotive, Multimedia, Customer Engineering

TalentLab is recruiting a Staff Software Applications Engineer to work on next-generation automotive infotainment and digital cockpit platforms.

This is a hands-on embedded engineering role working closely with automotive manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers from initial development through production launch. You'll work across hardware and software boundaries, helping customers integrate, debug, customize and optimize complex embedded platforms incorporating graphics, display, camera, video and audio technologies.

The role combines deep technical problem solving with direct customer interaction, making it well suited to an experienced embedded engineer who enjoys both debugging difficult systems problems and working closely with engineering teams bringing real products to market.

What You'll Work On
  • Support automotive customers and partners through platform development, integration and commercialization.

  • Debug and resolve complex embedded software and hardware/software integration issues.

  • Develop, integrate and customize software features for automotive infotainment and digital cockpit platforms.

  • Work across multimedia subsystems including graphics, display, camera, video and audio.

  • Analyze automotive platform hardware, software and driver architectures.

  • Perform live and post-mortem debugging of complex system-level issues.

  • Optimize system performance and help customers meet product requirements.

  • Work with Linux, Android, QNX and other embedded operating environments.

  • Read and interpret technical specifications, requirements and hardware documentation.

  • Collaborate with internal engineering teams and external customers to keep product launches on schedule.

What We're Looking For
  • Strong embedded software development and debugging experience.

  • Advanced programming skills in C/C++, with Java or Python experience also valuable.

  • Experience developing or debugging software close to hardware.

  • Strong understanding of embedded operating systems such as Linux, Android or QNX.

  • Experience with at least one embedded multimedia area such as: Graphics, Display, Camera, Video, Audio

  • Strong system-level debugging and analytical skills.

  • Ability to quickly understand unfamiliar hardware and software architectures.

  • Experience working directly with customers, partners or external engineering teams is highly valued.

  • Bachelor's, Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.

Particularly Relevant Experience

We're especially interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Automotive infotainment or digital cockpit systems.

  • Embedded Linux, Android Automotive or QNX.

  • Graphics APIs including OpenGL, OpenGL ES, Vulkan or OpenCL.

  • GPU architecture, buffer management or shaders.

  • Display, camera or graphics drivers.

  • Audio frameworks and drivers.

  • Video and audio codecs including HEVC, H.264, AAC or MP3.

  • Hypervisors and virtualization.

  • Linux kernel concepts and device drivers.

  • System performance profiling and optimization.

  • Platform bring-up and hardware/software integration.

  • JTAG, Trace32, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers or similar low-level debugging tools.

The Role

This isn't purely an application development position. The strongest candidates will be comfortable getting deep into an embedded system to figure out why something isn't working — whether the issue sits in application software, an operating system, a driver, a multimedia subsystem or the underlying hardware.

You'll also be directly involved with customers bringing complex automotive platforms into production, so strong communication skills and the ability to translate technical findings into practical solutions are important.

This is a Staff-level opportunity with significant technical ownership and visibility across engineering teams and customer programs.
