Brief Role Description

At theInnovation & Engineering Center California (IECC), we represent the Volkswagen Group in applied research and development. As a senior-level software engineer in the Intelligent Cockpit & Body (ICB) department, you will coordinate and implement both Android Automotive OS platform features as well as Customer-facing features of our connected, embedded Infotainment System. You’ll make use of state-of-the-art technologies to enrich our best-in-class multi-brand OneInfotainment System for all Volume, Premium & Sport Brands of the VW Group. Application profiling and optimization are an integral part of the daily work. Mentoring and knowledge transfer to junior software developers is an essential part of the day-to-day business. We the next generations of infotainment and car computing systems as a team, collaborating with leading technology partners and Tier 1s.

Possible Tasks within this Role

Development activities (70%):

  • Joint software development of car computer solutions in early development phases in collaboration with system engineers and software experts from technology partners
  • Analysis and profiling of Android framework, system applications, or system services
  • Identification of architectural/technical issues on AOSP framework level
  • Improvement of Android framework stability and optimization of critical operation states
  • Contribution to Android related framework and company-owned frameworks with interface reviews
  • Technical alignment with suppliers and development partners
  • Implementation of state-of-the-art approaches to develop best-in-class infotainment systems

Work Flexibility: Physical requirements, travel requirements, work schedule, etc.

  • Frequent early morning (virtual) meetings to align with stakeholders and development teams in Germany.
  • Occasional domestic & international business travel may require on-site support and planning/integration workshops with our suppliers and development partners.

Additional responsibilities (30%):

  • Creation of technical specifications and documentation
  • Independent handling of project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables
  • Tracking of assigned system issues, including ticket reviews
  • Status reporting to project stakeholders (domestic and international)
  • Mentoring of junior software developers on best practices and design patterns
  • Cross-team resource management and alignment of project goals
Qualification requirements

  • 3+ years of working experience in modifying Android framework components, system services, and the Android SDK
  • 5+ years of working experience with object-oriented designs
  • Proficiency in C++, Java, or Kotlin
  • Solid working experience with the software life-cycle methodologies
  • Cross-team resource management to align and reach project goals
  • Working experience with Google Services for Android (GAS)
  • Familiar with CDD and related test suites (like the Compatibility Test Suite)
  • Experience with agile development practices and tools (e.g., SAFe, Confluence, Jira, etc.)
  • Leadership experience for small software teams in the automotive industry
  • Tooling expert to optimize the performance of Linux / Android applications
  • Hands-on knowledge about different types of hypervisors in automotive environments

Compensation Data

In Silicon Valley (California), the salary range for this role will be $155,000 - $195,000, depending on education and years of relevant experience. Salary is determined by geographical location and adjusted accordingly.
