POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general guidance of the Operations Manager, the Lead Tech provides administrative and technical leadership for the Antenatal Testing Unit (ATU). Lead Technologist leads, plans and coordinates the daily operations of the ATU department through interactions with staff, administration, other departments, MFMs and others as necessary. Primary duty is to coordinate all aspects of the day-to-day operations to ensure the delivery of quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures and professional standards.

Position: Lead Ultrasound Tech
Department: Antenatal Testing - MP

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
  • Assists the Operations Manager in daily operations relating to the technical workings of the ATU and oversees the work of assigned technical staff and clinic flow coordinator.
  • Schedules and assigns sonographers as required by the needs of the department. Ensures proper staffing and allocates sonographers and other staff to departmental areas as necessary and appropriate for patient care, budget, staffing and department/hospital needs. Oversees employees for assigned shift. Ensures that employees are performing duties and following policies and procedures as necessary.
  • Assumes responsibility for monitoring patient flow, timely registrations, and monitors patients wait time. Reassigns staff as needed to optimize patient flow. Establishes and maintains efficient communications between front desk, and clinical personnel.
  • Assists in the implementation and ongoing utilization of quality assurance programs with involvement from the Operations Manager, Director of ATU, and Quality and Safety Manager. Maintains compliance logs for equipment and QA measures including those required by the RDMS, Joint Commission, DPH, etc. and attends compliance rounds when requested.
  • Maintains equipment and physical space and department service vendors to maximize equipment up time, and minimize dollar impact to the hospital. Coordinates service calls, internal work orders and other equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Assists the Operations Manager and Flow Coordinator in the maintenance and need for adequate supplies for the ATU and assess par levels on a weekly basis. Submits supply orders as needed, ensuring that expenses are within the constraints of the departmental budget.
  • Stocks exam rooms with supplies and maintains supply room in accordance with hospital compliance requirements.
  • Works closely with the Operations Manager to give feedback and improve individual department budgets, patient care and sonographer training and initiatives.
  • Coordinate and supervise obstetrics ultrasound education for ultrasound techs, medical students and residents.
  • Resolves patient scheduling issues by working with appropriate providers and staff. Assists with scheduling patients if required. Assists department with emergency re-scheduling due to equipment down time or other events.
  • Maintains clinical protocols and assists in making changes when required. Assists in research protocol development and training and attends investigator meetings and training sessions.
  • Performs appropriate studies as determined through ATU's policies, procedures and routine protocols. Follows protocol in terms of providing proper study on properly identified patient. Ensures that exams requested match patient condition and/or history and calls or asks proper persons for more information as necessary to perform the proper study.
  • Completes exams in a timely fashion while providing quality images. Completes work by the end of the shift or communicates with coworkers about work needing completion.
  • Performs patient centered customer service and ensures the following standards are met appropriately and achieved. Communicates patient complaints professionally to the appropriate manager. Ensures HIPAA compliance at all times. Handles telephone calls and requests for services both professionally and appropriately.
  • Responds to patient's and/or patient's family's complaints in an appropriate and effective manner. Serves as patients and families advocate.
  • Assists and assigns the cleaning and organizing of the department on own initiative and report any malfunctioning equipment to the Operations Manager and also calls for service and places information in service log for all to see.
  • Facilitates, reassures and offers support to the patient undergoing exam procedures in order to reduce possible stress and anxiety as well as enlist patient cooperation.
  • Monitors patient conditions and if it is determined assistance may be required, employee takes action to facilitate the best course of care to include: nurse involvement, further monitoring and/or other patient focused solutions.
  • Ensures that all required documentation is properly completed for billing purposes to include (but not necessarily limited to) electronic orders, and all paperwork related to procedures performed.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude every day by focusing on the job.
  • Maintains current licensure, registrations, certifications, continuing education requirements and completes hospital and departmental competencies on time. Keeps track of licensure, registrations and certificates for sonographers (NTQR, CLEAR, ARDMS). Leads on-going re-certification process for AIUM accreditation.
  • Works hours as regularly scheduled or according to the operational needs the Department.
  • Follows all departments' established and appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Utilizes hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital's mission and goals.
  • Understands and models Boston Medical Center's RESPECT behavioral standards and QUEST goals. Practicing AIDET.
  • Treats patients and fellow staff with dignity and respect and reports any/all problems to Operations Manager.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures. Performs other duties as needed.
  • BIPOC (Black/Brown, Indigenous, and other People of Color) applicants are encourages to apply.
  • Maintains and responds to Epic Pool messages in a timely manner. Works closely with ATU Flow Coordinator to ensure all messaged are completed.
  • Reviews images and assists sonographers in obtaining images unable to be obtained prior to the MFM reviewing.
  • Coordinates Student Ultrasound Tech schedules and works with Clinical Coordinates of the students to monitor student progress, fill out evaluations and competencies. Coordinates other learners (residents, genetic counseling students) schedules and orientates learners to the unit.
  • Leads and manages educational activities for the unit including BU CME sonographer lecture series, QI image review and collaborates with the genetic counselors on state required anomaly reporting

JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
  • Associates degree or a 2-year patient-based allied health program (Ultrasound, Medical Sonography or Radiology preferred) or Armed Forces equivalent medic/corpsman program (DD-214 required as proof)
  • Certification RDMS (Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography) required.

EXPERIENCE:
  • At least two years experience in Level 2 OB/GYN ultrasound are required.
  • Previous supervisory experience is strongly preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Ability to rely on experience, judgement and time management skills to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Must present a positive team oriented attitude and a professional appearance.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients and all/any apprehensions, to instruct students/staff and to interact with other sonographers.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with members of the healthcare delivery team and staff, ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule; to set priorities and solve problems; to respond quickly to emergency requests.
  • Work requires knowledge of principles and procedures of Ultrasound and the operation and maintenance of Ultrasound equipment.
  • Work requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients and all/any apprehensions, to instruct students and to provide technical supervision to staff technologists.
  • Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to enter and access data/information. Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Outlook and web browsers;
  • Ability to analyze data and ability to prepare written reports.
  • Leadership ability to guide, direct, and mentor staff.

Compensation Range:
$34.38- $50.00
This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer.
