An Attorney Teaching job involves a licensed attorney educating students, professionals, or the public on legal topics. This role may be in law schools, universities, or continuing legal education programs. Responsibilities include developing course materials, lecturing, mentoring students, and staying updated on legal developments. Some attorney educators work full-time in academia, while others teach part-time alongside practicing law.
To thrive as an Attorney Teaching, you need a robust legal background (JD degree and bar admission), extensive practical law experience, and expertise in legal education methods. Familiarity with legal research databases, learning management systems (LMS), and accreditation standards is often essential. Strong communication, mentoring, and public speaking skills set outstanding candidates apart, along with patience and adaptability to varying student needs. These qualifications ensure the delivery of high-quality legal education while fostering critical thinking and professional growth among students.
Attorney Teaching professionals often begin as adjuncts, lecturers, or assistant professors, with opportunities to advance to tenured faculty positions, department leadership roles, or specialized academic chairs. With experience, many move into administrative positions such as Dean of Students, Academic Director, or even full Deanships. There are also opportunities to contribute to legal scholarship through research, publishing, or curriculum development. Progression is often based on effective teaching, student engagement, contributions to the academic community, and ongoing involvement in the legal profession.
