What is an attorney manager?

An Attorney Manager is a legal professional who oversees a team of attorneys within a law firm, corporate legal department, or government agency. Their responsibilities include supervising legal staff, managing caseloads, ensuring compliance with legal standards, and providing mentorship to junior attorneys. They also coordinate workflow, review legal documents, and often play a key role in hiring and performance evaluations. Attorney Managers help maintain high-quality legal services while supporting organizational goals and client needs.

How does an attorney manager balance overseeing legal teams with handling their own caseload or client matters?

As an Attorney Manager, you are expected to both supervise a team of attorneys and legal staff and, in many firms or departments, maintain your own caseload or client portfolio. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong time management, delegation, and communication skills. You'll often set priorities for the team, provide mentorship or feedback, review important documents, and step in on complex cases, while also ensuring your own legal work meets deadlines and quality standards. Effective Attorney Managers foster collaboration, set clear expectations, and leverage administrative support to stay organized and responsive.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an attorney manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Attorney Manager, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, active bar membership, substantial legal experience, and proven leadership abilities. Familiarity with legal research databases, case management software, and compliance systems is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, strategic thinking, and effective team management help set exceptional Attorney Managers apart. These competencies are vital to ensure high-quality legal services, efficient team performance, and adherence to legal and ethical standards.
