Position Summary

Education for Change is looking for an Athletic Coach who can manage and supervise athletic activities for a seasonal athletic team. The coach will be leading practices, games, meetings, and working with a team to ensure staff and student awareness of the program. They will help participating student-athletes achieve a high level of skill and an appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship. The coach must know how to successfully work in an urban elementary school with a high English Learner and low-income population.

Responsibilities:

Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully to be qualified for the position. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by the coaching staff. Design conferences, clinics and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program. 
• Manage and supervise athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, discipline, respect, and good sportsmanship. 
• Ensure that all coaches work together toward a common goal within their respective programs 
• Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate students’ athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis (i.e., statistics, film, etc.). 
• Train and inform staff and encourage professional growth by promoting clinic attendance. 
• Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and at season’s end, analyze staff effectiveness and evaluate all assistants. 
• Exert his or her influence to enhance sportsmanship by spectators, both directly and by working closely with cheerleaders, pep club’s sponsors, booster clubs, and administrators. 
• Take all necessary precautions to protect student athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities. 
• Monitor and enforce student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation. 
• Work with the athletic department to schedule competitions and coordinate arrangements (i.e., facilities, busing, camps, special events, etc.). 
• Accompany and supervise student athletes during athletic competitions in assigned sports on out-of-town trips. 
• Instruct and advise students on BACSAC rules and regulations. 
• Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, and encourage sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation. 
• Establish and maintain open, professional and respectful communications with students, guardians, teachers, and athletic director 
• Have the total athletic and school program at interest. Be supportive of student participation in other school activities and communicate with colleagues regarding expectations in and out of season. 
• Maintain inventory of all uniforms and equipment within program. 
• Annually establish and meet performance goals. 
• The administration or designee may assign other duties and accountabilities limited to those consistent with the applicable job function and pay grade. 
• Be familiar with and adhere to school board policies, particularly those governing student nondiscrimination, anti-harassment, bullying, mandatory reporting, student record confidentiality, and other pertinent school board policies. 
• Advise students and parents on athletic code of conduct, including consequences for violation, and coordinate with athletic director in instances of possible violations of the code of conduct. 

Required Qualifications:

• Passionate about working with students from underserved communities
• General knowledge of coaching techniques, competitive coaching strategies, conditioning, and procedures
• Ability to lead a sport program for all levels of the specific sport; to teach values of teamwork, self-sacrifice, responsibility, obedience, and good sportsmanship; motivate student athletes.  
• Knowledge of CIF/Conference rules 
• Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Desired Qualifications:

• Education/Certification: Valid teaching certificate OR prior coaching experience and NFHS Certification and CPR/First Aid Certification
• Experience or a desire to work in a diverse school district 

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation will be on an hourly basis and is considered a temporary role. Compensation will depend on experience and qualifications as determined by the school site. This is a non-union role. Please see below for details.

Latitude Athletics Compensation

In-season stipend:

Head Coach Varsity:

Additional $75/game beyond 10 games

Assistant Coach Varsity:

$700 total

If there is more than one assistant coach, the $700 will be split between the coaches

Additional $35/game beyond 10 games

Head Coach JV:

$300/month-$1200 maximum

Assistant Coach JV:

No stipend

In cases where only a JV team exists, coaches will be paid at Varsity rate

Minimum of two activities per week: combination of practice/competitions, although more than two are strongly recommended to remain competitive

5% stipend increase/year for returning coaches, $500 retention bonus after 5 years. (see chart below). JV coaches who move up to Varsity will receive credit at Varsity level.

For all coaches:

• Up to $300 reimbursement for pre-approved trainings and professional development

Off-Season Stipends

• For off-season one-off activities, coaches can submit proposals that include rationale and itemized costs. Pay will be $40/hour with $200/day maximum, pending approval from principal and athletic director
• For regular off-season workouts, $40/hour with $500/month maximum.
