What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Atelier Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Atelier Intern, a strong foundation in garment construction, sewing techniques, and fashion design principles—often gained through formal education or prior hands-on experience—is essential. Familiarity with industry tools like industrial sewing machines, pattern-making software (such as Gerber or CLO 3D), and basic textile knowledge is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and strong teamwork skills help interns excel in fast-paced studio environments. These abilities are crucial for ensuring high-quality garment production, supporting creative teams, and meeting tight deadlines in the fashion industry.

What are atelier interns?

Atelier interns are individuals who work in an atelier, which is a workshop or studio—often within the fashion, art, or design industries—to gain hands-on experience in their chosen field. Interns typically assist with tasks such as garment construction, fabric sourcing, pattern making, and studio organization. This position provides valuable exposure to the creative process and industry practices, allowing interns to build their portfolios and develop professional skills under the guidance of experienced designers or artists.

What is the difference between Atelier Intern vs Atelier Assistant?

AspectAtelier InternAtelier Assistant
CredentialsTypically enrolled in or recent graduate of art, design, or fashion programsMay require similar educational background, but often with some work experience
Work EnvironmentHands-on learning in a creative atelier setting, assisting with projectsSupports daily operations, helps with tasks, and collaborates with the team
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in fashion, art studios, and design workshops for training rolesCommon in similar industries for operational support roles

While both roles involve working in an atelier environment, an Atelier Intern is primarily a learning position for students or recent graduates gaining practical experience. An Atelier Assistant typically has some experience and supports the atelier's daily functions, contributing more actively to ongoing projects.

What types of tasks and projects can an Atelier Intern expect to work on, and how do these contribute to professional growth?

As an Atelier Intern, you will typically assist with hands-on work such as fabric cutting, garment construction, hand-finishing, and preparing materials for fittings. You may also help with organization of the atelier, sourcing materials, and supporting the design or production teams with sample development. These tasks provide invaluable exposure to the fashion production process and foster essential technical skills, attention to detail, and teamwork—key for advancing in the fashion industry. Collaborating closely with experienced artisans and designers also offers mentorship opportunities and insight into career paths within the atelier environment.

Job description

We're an innovative multidisciplinary firm of environmental design consultants, building services engineers and lighting designers focused on delivering high-quality, award-winning building services and sustainable design within the built environment sector.

Who are we?
Thank you for asking! Kindness and curiosity are some of Atelier Ten's core tenets.
We are a team of environmental designers championing for a healthier planet leveraging our vast, collective knowledge of sustainable spaces. We help bring beauty and efficiency to every building, because like Maybelline, not all buildings
are "born with it."

We work with architects, engineers, owners, and other stakeholders to accomplish their sustainability, wellness, functionality, and visual goals. We don't just follow the trends of the industry, we trailblaze new paths to create high performance, sustainable, and award-winning buildings.

What is this role on a high level?
Let's take a moment to see the overview of the role before we get into the nitty gritty.

We want you to be Atelier Ten San Francisco's newest Summer Intern, focused on Benchmarking. In this role you will have an introduction to working within a project team to optimize design options for relevant benchmarking systems.

You'll work on LEED, ILFI, SITES, Fitwel and/or WELL program administration, which includes analyzing feasibility of specific credits as well as supporting the overall documentation process during design and construction. You will help
teams to identify opportunities and make recommendations on daylighting, energy systems, water use, thermal comfort, occupant health, sustainable materials, and more.

What your day-to-day looks like
Days at Atelier Ten are filled with a large variety of project types from offices, labs to large masterplans. We promise to keep you challenged and never bored. Here are some regular tasks you may encounter:

  • Assist with project deliverables such as reports, memos, and technical reports.

  • Creating graphic illustrations, drawing from our various technical practices.

  • Collaborate with design and contractor teams to support all aspects of sustainability certifications.

Work on multiple types of projects within the built environment ranging from institutional to commercial to residential building projects as well as large scale

master plans.

What we are looking for

Hopefully you're on board so far and excited about what your days at Atelier will look like. We do have a few items on our wish list for you to become the next great A-Tenner. We are looking for someone who is curious, proactive, self-
motivated with an appreciation and willingness to learn on multiple projects. And if we're not pushing our luck with asks, you ideally will possess:

  • Completed or pursuing a bachelor's or higher degree in a field related to environmental building design,
  • architecture, architectural engineering, and/ or building science
  • Experience with LEED certification. Other relevant sustainability certification systems are also desirable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign), and Rhino
  • Demonstrated skills in computer and hand drafting, and sketching proficiency in written and spoken English,
  • and good verbal, inter-personal and writing skills
  • In addition, skills in software such as "R," Grasshopper, Radiance, Revit, eQuest, EnergyPlus, IES, D3, or datavisualization would be desirable

Atelier Ten US seeks to compensate staff based on a variety of factors related to the role and the candidate. These factors include (but are not limited to) the responsibilities, requirements, and location of the position, as well as the candidate's education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. We also consider internal equity, market data, and growth potential.

The good faith estimate of the base compensation offered for this role is $22 per hour. This rate does not include the value of Atelier Ten's many benefit offerings.

How to apply

Sadly, we no longer accept phone calls, award winning films, or interpretive dances as applications. But we will take the following:

A resume, and a cover letter (which includes a little about yourself such as hobbies, last great vacation, recent reads, etc.) along with your general application.

Reasonable Adjustments

We are committed to ensuring an inclusive and accessible recruitment process for all candidates. If you require any reasonable adjustments or additional support-such as receiving the application form in an alternative format-please don't hesitate to contact our recruitment team.

Your experience throughout the application process is important to us. We welcome feedback on how we can improve and are happy to provide any further information you may need to help you make an informed decision about joining us.

If there's anything more we can do to support you, please let us know, we're here to help.
