Murphy VA Medical Center The New Mexico VA Healthcare System (NMVAHCS), located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is part of VA Desert Pacific Network (VISN22), comprised of eight health care system and 65 community clinics serving 1.5 million veterans in Arizona, New Mexico and Southern California which includes facilities in California, Nevada, and Hawaii.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Registered Respiratory Therapist performs respiratory care services in accordance with the guidelines established by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC), American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC), and the policies and procedures of the Hines VA Medical Center. The protocol and procedures are established for the treatment, management, evaluation and care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities associated with the cardiopulmonary system. Duties include:

  • Performs therapeutic and diagnostic procedures with the use of medical gases and administration devices, humidification and aerosols.
  • Administers medication to the cardiopulmonary system.
  • Uses ventilator support, including maintenance and management of life support systems, and the patient/ventilator interface.
  • Performs bronchopulmonary drainage and breathing exercised.
  • Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Performs as a member of the rapid response team (RRT).
  • Inserts and maintains artificial airways including but not limited to endotracheal tubes (ET) and intubating laryngotracheo mask (ILMA) airways.
  • Performs arterial punctures and blood gas analysis.
  • Provides patient and family education.
  • Recognizes the need for medical intervention if patient safety is at risk.
  • Conducts home oxygen evaluations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • NBRC Certification
  • BLS (American Heart Association Health Providers) Certification
  • Associate Degree or higher in Respiratory Therapy from an approved school
  • At least one year experience
