Job Title: Packer
Department: Production (FOAM, PAPER CUPS, LIDS)
Supervisor's Title: Production Supervisor
Location: Tolleson, AZ
Work Type: On-Site (Not a Remote Position)
Day Schedule: 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Night Schedule 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM, plus shift differential.
Must be available for cross-train in other departments and support as needed.
Job Summary
This position primarily supports operational needs in the FOAM department.
The Packer visually inspect product being produced, such as foam cups, paper cups and lids, properly separates and packages the product. A packer is responsible for notifying proper individual(s) when quality, product food safety, or production problems arise and ensures that only quality product is packaged into finished cases. A packer follows GMPs and supports the smooth flow of the product through the packaging room by working at an efficient pace and by responding to equipment malfunction signals in the assigned packing area.
SAFETY must always be a PRIORITY ONE in your mind. Your own personnel and any and all persons that your actions will affect.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  1. Adheres to all good manufacturing practices (GMP), food safety, HACCP and SQF process requirements; rectify and/or report any and all non-compliance to Management or the SQF practitioner immediately.
  2. Ensures that adequate vital supplies, i.e., tape, bagging, knockdown cases, etc. are available to perform duties. Either obtains supplies or notifies Utility of requirements.
  3. Reports to all scheduled shifts and attends pre-shift and safety meetings as required
  4. Constructs carton to contain product, ensuring that proper carton is being utilized to hold product being produced.
  5. Visually inspects product through plastic bag or in bulk form prior to bagging. Inspects packaging for proper print and seal. Periodically opens random logs of product to perform close visual inspection. Notifies Production Leader or Production Equipment Operator immediately of any identified quality defects.
  6. Packs product into previously constructed cartons ensuring that the correct number of bags of product are packed according to product order specifications. Accurately counts the cups into the bag if hand bagging.
  7. Properly seals the carton and supplies proper stamping or labels, making certain that the code date is on each carton, correctly coded and legible.
  8. Sets aside defective product for correction or scrapping to make certain that no defective product reaches the customer.
  9. Works at an effective and safe pace to keep packing bins or stacking tubes clear.
  10. Assists other team members as needed.
  11. Assures smooth flow of product through the packing room by responding to any product jams (bells, buzzers, and lights), clearing the product jam, and restarting the equipment properly and safely. Repackages products that have been miss packaged due to miscounts.
  12. Maintains housekeeping standards by keeping a clean work area at all times.
  13. In the event of the absence of the Inspector/Packer due to vacations the Shift Supervisor will request an Inspection/ Packer fill in from another shift.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned by Lead Packer, Lead PEO and Shift Supervisor.

The characteristics listed below are representative of the physical demands required by an individual to successfully perform the essential duties of a position in our manufacturing plants. Note that office positions located within our Manufacturing Plants often require some plant floor presence throughout the day so that while these demands may not always apply, they should still be noted.
  • Team Member will frequently be required to actively listen and exchange information.
  • Team Member will be required to observe and assess information in a fast paced environment.
  • Requires frequent use of a production, manufacturing equipment and/or machinery such as a densifier, melter and baler.
  • Will be required to frequently move/transport materials weighing up to 30 pounds, which may require frequent bending, twisting and reaching motions.
  • Team Member may be required to remain stationary for extended periods of time.
  • Team Member may be required to stand/sit for long periods up to 8, 10 or 12 hours shift.
  • Team Member may be required to talk, walk, sit; use hands to manually inspect, grasp, handle and feel objects, tools, and controls; reach with hands and arms; lift, pull, push, stoop, kneel, bend, crawl or crouch.
Working Conditions (Manufacturing Plant):
The characteristics listed below are representative of the work environment typically encountered by an individual while performing the essential duties of a position in our manufacturing plants. Note that office positions located within our Manufacturing Plants often require some plant floor presence throughout the day so these work environment details may not always apply, they should still be noted.
  • Workspace contains moving mechanical parts.
  • Requires work in an indoor manufacturing environment that may be exposed to extreme heat that is not air conditioned.
  • Work environment contains loud noises and odors that may last for long periods of time or on a continual basis as well as occasional airborne particles.
  • Must wear PPE while working, which includes hairnet, beard-net, gloves, hearing protection and safety glasses with side guards at all times.
  • Ability to work an 8+, 10+ or 12+ hour shifts as designated.
  • Able to work weekdays, weekends and overtime as designated.
