The purpose of the Masonry Instructor at Central Carolina Community College is to teach Career Technical Education courses and to supervise students' practical lab projects at Sanford Correctional Center. This is accomplished through administration of course objectives, course outlines, course competencies, course descriptions, and teaching strategies in the specific curriculum to ascertain that they are appropriate and relevant, and that the associated teaching/learning practices are compliant with North Carolina Department of Public Safety regulations.
  • Instruction will take place in a minimum correctional facility. Must daily abide by all rules and practices administered by Sanford Correctional Center custody staff. Must also wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment accordingly.
  • Annually, must complete prescribed NC Department of Public Safety training.
  • Please include unofficial copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts. Will be required to submit official copies of transcripts before the start date.
  • This position may have occasional travel between campuses and for training. Occasional after hours may be required.
  • This position requires face to face teaching

Essential Duties
  • Daily work in close proximity to minimum custody inmates.
  • Teach 160 hours per 8-week contract, and maintain a safe learning environment.
  • Prepare for and meet classes as assigned, promptly evaluating student progress within one week.
  • Demonstrate concern for student retention by employing best practice strategies.
  • Assist in registration and orientation as requested by the supervisor.
  • Keep supervisor informed of matters pertaining to the curriculum.
  • Follow policies stated in the policies and procedures manual as it relates to instructor responsibilities.
  • Notify supervisor and/or Provost when planning to be off campus during regular working hours.
  • Submit records and forms in a timely fashion as required in the policy and procedures manual.

Minimum Requirements
Required educational background:
  • Diploma in a construction related disciplined, such as building construction management, construction technology, or masonry technology; or
  • Associate Degree in General Occupational Technology with demonstrated experience/credit by experience in a construction-focused discipline; or
  • Approved alternate portfolio with the background, experience, and credentials to justify qualifications as approved by the Dean and Chief Academic Officer.
  • Must pass background check administered by the NC Department of Public Safety (prior to hire)

Required kind and number years of work experience:
  • Minimum of three years' demonstrated experience in the masonry career/technical field.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Knowledge of building construction methods and materials
  • Knowledge of hand tools, power tools, and masonry-specific tools, methods, materials, and finishes
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and best practices
  • Skills in reading and interpreting blueprints
  • Ability to demonstrate, assess, and evaluate building construction methods
  • Ability to direct students in either indoor/outdoor lab setting while maintaining supervision of tools and materials

Preferred Requirements
  • Previous continuing education experience is a plus.
