JOB SUMMARY

Under supervision, Instructional Student Assistants (ISA) in this classification perform grading, tutoring, and/ or laboratory assistance duties for most work hours in a given appointment in the School of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) over the course of an academic term. Assignments are made by the School of Computer Science and Engineering department or a CSE faculty member at California State University, San Bernardino. The work may be performed on campus and the hours assigned must be approved by the Director of CSE.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES

Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff and students across a wide range of disciplines.

The work performed in an ISA appointment in the School of Computer Science and Engineering over the course of an academic term is tutoring, grading and/or laboratory assistance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. While working as an Instructional Student Assistant the applicant must be enrolled in a class on campus.
  2. New hires will be required to attend a Human Resources New Hire Orientation before they can begin work. If the student accepts an Instructional Student Assistant job offer, they must be willing to take an employee background check.
  3. If the individual being offered an ISA position needs a Social Security number, they must notify the CSE department as soon as possible to receive a contingency offer letter to take to the local Social Security office.
  4. The applicant must list on their ISA application form the classes and units for each class they will be taking during their time as an ISA.
  5. Student workers are not allowed to work over 20 hours per week in their roles. If offered multiple student positions on campus, the student must notify each supervisor. All hours worked for each position must not exceed 20 hours per week.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • The applicant must show evidence of satisfactory progress toward completing their degree. Instructional Student Assistants must remain academically eligible by maintaining a graduate GPA of 2.5 or higher. The applicant must also maintain continuous enrollment and cannot be on probation during this time.
  • Applicants must be admitted or registered in a program at CSUSB.
  • Applicants must possess the ability to learn and perform assigned work, work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students, and accept responsibility.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Candidates working towards a graduate level degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field at the time of appointment.
  • Candidates with good academic standing at CSUSB.

Evidence of scholarly activity, publication, and innovation is valued. Evidence of exemplary graduate-level teaching and leadership experience at program level is preferred and should be noted in application.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may result in the withdrawal of the offer of employment.
