Job description

Assistant Professor in Computer Science - AI Track

The University of Texas Permian Basin's College of Engineering & Sciences welcomes applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Computer Science with specialization in artificial intelligence. The starting date for this position is January 2027. Priority will be given to applications received by August 24, 2026.

Essential Functions

We seek individuals with a passion for teaching and a desire to engage students in the classroom and supervise and mentor students on research and industry projects. We blend traditional subject matter mastery with problem-solving, industry-based applications, and laboratory experiences. These opportunities enhance student learning to prepare them for the workplace and a career of lifelong learning. The individual is expected to contribute to the development and growth of the Computer Science program. In addition, the applicant is expected to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses, seek external funding, establish an appropriate research program that leads to peer-reviewed publications, and provide service to the program, university, community, and profession. The College of Engineering & Sciences has excellent experimental facilities and computational resources. Collaboration with entities within and outside Computer Science is highly encouraged. Considerable institutional resources are available to support the successful applicant’s research program.

  • Official duties and responsibilities of a Tenure Track faculty members include teaching, research, and service activities as assigned.
  • This is a tenure track full-time faculty position on a 9 months contract
  • Faculty are required to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses
  • Face to face and or hybrid teaching interactions through a regular schedule of attendance on campus for a minimum of four days a week.
  • Assist in collecting assessment data as outlined by the ABET and SACSCOC Program Coordinator
  • Achieve appropriate student-learning outcomes in all courses taught
  • Faculty are expected to employ sound pedagogical practices and use appropriate technology
  • Student course evaluations are to be completed each course
  • Abide by deadlines and processes for submitting grades
  • Advise students and provide individual help to students during weekly office hours
  • Participate in course/laboratory revisions and curriculum development as assigned
  • Work with other faculty and staff to advance the program
  • Work as per a flexible schedule that includes evening assignments
  • Other service/duties, as assigned by the Dean and the Department Chair
Required Qualifications
  1. 1. An earned doctorate in Computer Science or a closely related field at the time of appointment.
  2. 2. Demonstrated research experience and publications in Artificial Intelligence (AI).
  3. 3. Ability to teach courses in the following areas: Introduction to Computer Science, Artificial intelligence, and Information Systems at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  4. 4. A strong publication record in the field of AI and the potential to succeed in securing research funding and mentoring students.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. 1. Post-doctoral research experience.
  2. 2. Demonstrated success or history of effort to obtain external funding for research.
  3. 3. A history of working with teams, especially those spanning multiple disciplines.
  4. 4. A history of supervising and mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students.
  5. 5. Record of successful teaching at the college level.
  6. 6. Past work experience in national lab and/or industry.
Additional Information From the Department

The College of Engineering and Sciences offers B.S. in Civil, Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Mechanical, and Petroleum Engineering as well as B.S. in Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, and Mathematics and M.S. in Computer Science and Geology. The Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering Programs are ABET Accredited. The College is also home to the Texas Water and Energy Institute and the newly opened Advanced Manufacturing Center. The College is housed in building that opened in 2019, with excellent facilities for instructional and curricular activities and research and development.

Schedule

Generally, the normal work hours for the university are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 – 5:30 pm; Friday, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm with a one-hour lunch. The individual holding this position may need to be available early morning, evening, and on weekends to meet the needs of the department. Faculty hours may differ based on class schedule and department need.

Standard Working Conditions
  1. 1. Able to lift various materials up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.
  2. 2. Able to bend, crouch, and reach continuously.
  3. 3. Physically able remain seated, frequently to continuously.
  4. 4. Able to remain standing up to 15% of the time.
  5. 5. Possesses dexterity abilities required to perform job duties including extensive keyboard work, operating office equipment, performing filing, and other job-related responsibilities that include extensive wrist and hand movement.
  6. 6. Standard working conditions may differ depending on department and occupation.
