Responsibilities

Nautilus Insurance, a W. R. Berkley company, is seeking a Senior Underwriter for their Light Brokerage Business.  This position can be located in our Scottsdale, AZ headquarters or remotely in the Western US for a highly qualified candidate.

The Senior Undewriter's primary job functions include [1] developing a comprehensive knowledge of the company's appetite in this product space and maintaining industry awareness in relation to opportunities and threats, [2] underwriting, including communicating appetite, rate, and underwriting information to agents, [3] overseeing renewal business and managing renewal underwriters to ensure consistent execution of underwriting strategy, and [4] supporting the underwriting process through training of new hires and development of associates.

  • Underwrites select risks in accordance with company guidelines for acceptability and rate.
  • Underwrites new business submissions, including evaluating risk characteristics, pricing, and coverage to ensure alignment with company appetite and profitability objectives.
  • Assists other underwriters with submission review and quoting during periods of high volume to help manage workflow, maintain service standards, and support team productivity.
  • Analyzes market conditions and provide suggestions for needed changes in forms, endorsements, and rates including opportunities for market or product expansion or enhancement.
  • Collaborates with Contract Bind production underwriting teams along with Light Brokerage teammates to ensure proper placement of a risk and communicate market/agent trends and issues between divisions
  • Corresponds or consults with agents, brokers, and other interested persons to determine feasibility and marketability of new products to meet competition and increase sales.
  • Contributes to the development and maintenance of E-Guide, enhancements on web portal and other electronic products that may arise including notification of changes to internal and external customers.
  • Provides guidance and support to less experienced team members within the department.
  • Develops and implements, with the help of the Product Development team, new opportunities for product expansion to drive more profitable business to the portfolio
  • Reviews industry publications and monitors pending legislation and regulations to determine impact of new developments on company insurance products.
  • Proficient at creating manuscript policy language with the help of Forms and Legal teams.
  • Oversees renewal book of business to ensure alignment with underwriting guidelines and profitability objectives.
  • Provides guidance to renewal underwriters on pricing, risk selection, and coverage decisions.
  • Monitors renewal retention, rate changes, and overall performance to identify trends and drive corrective action
  • Partners with agents and brokers to negotiate renewal terms and retain desirable accounts.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; or 5+ years related insurance experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • CPCU, IIA or other insurance related classes recommended.
  • Excess and Surplus lines background is highly preferred.
  • 3+ years experience underwriting casualty products at a senior level required.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Good understanding of the E&S business environment.
  • The ability to effectively engage with leaders across the organization
  • Applicable knowledge of budgets, forecasting, and metrics.
  • Strong decision-making skills and responses to high-pressure situations.
